| 08/July/21 | US pushes Mexico for approval of GM crops The United States pressured Mexico on Wednesday to allow GM crops into the country and to open up access to US-grown potatoes. US Trade Representative Katherine Tai pushed for the concessions during a meeting in Mexico City with Mexican Agriculture Minister Víctor Villalobos and Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier. The Mexican government published a decree on the last day of 2020 that stated that the importation of GM corn would be banned by January 2024. Mexico News Daily UK TAKE ACTION: Ask your Council to go pesticide-free Other than residues in food, the most common way for the majority of people in the UK to be exposed to pesticides is through spending time in urban public areas. Local councils spray pesticides in parks, playgrounds and other green spaces, road verges, cemeteries, pavements and around council houses. Others that use pesticides include university campuses, car parks, hospitals, private housing developments, shopping centres and schools. In most UK towns and cities it is currently impossible to avoid exposure to pesticides. However, a growing number of places around the world have already gone pesticide-free and are proving that it can be done. Urban pesticides are unnecessary and should be banned immediately to protect human health and the environment. You can make change happen – join the campaign for pesticide-free towns!
