1839 - Joseph and Hyrum Smith, Alexander McRae, Caleb Baldwin, and Lyman Wight, after their arranged escape from Missouri and their traveling “by night and by day . . . suffering much fatigue and hunger,” arrive in Quincy, Illinois. Joseph is reunited with Emma and his family after suffering through six months of confinement, most of which was in Liberty Jail. He writes, “I arrived in Quincy, Illinois, amidst the congratulations of my friends, and the embraces of my family, whom I found as well as could be expected, considering what they had been called to endure” (History of the Church, 3:327).
