Whooping Cough Whooping cough -- also known as pertussis -- is a serious respiratory disease characterized by a persistent cough that can last for over 10 weeks. Pertussis can be deadly, particularly to infants. It is caused by an airborne bacteria, but people can be protected through inoculation. Unfortunately, pertussis appears to be on the increase. In 2012, the CDC reported 48,277 cases of pertussis in the United States, the highest incidence of cases since 1955.
