Michelle Knepler, a respiratory therapist at HSHS St. John’s Hospital, said she saw mothers in their 80s lose sons in their 50s during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said her work with COVID-19 patients who died actually helped her grieve the unexpected death of her 9-year-old son in a cardiac arrest in July of 2020.
