CynopsisJOBS
Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 11, 2017 and this is your first early morning Jobs briefing!

Attracting top talent today means benefits packages that include more than just the basics. Solid health care insurance and paid time off are a given. Bonuses are a plus. But what else can win over job seekers and keep employee churn low? It doesn’t take an indoor pool or in-house masseuse to keep employees happy (although...). We surveyed Cynopsis readers about what they’re looking for in a benefits package – and experts agree prospects now expect more than a paycheck.

“We conduct periodic employee surveys that tell us that company culture, parental leave benefits, and corporate social responsibility are all important factors,” says Chris Barksdale, SVP of Human Resources at Scripps Networks Interactive. “They want their personal values to be aligned with their company’s values.”

Among the almost 1000 readers who responded to our Cynopsis survey, close to 60% said a work-at-home option would be valuable to them, while 30% wanted more flexible work hours. That’s no surprise to Bruce Tulgan, management expert and founder of Rainmaking Thinking, who notes that part of the issue for today’s employees is the way technology has reshaped what constitutes work hours. “People of all ages now are in a 24/7 environment, connected by technology, and work is increasingly boundary-less,” says Tulgan. “People can work anywhere anytime. That also means a lot of people are working everywhere all the time! This creates more demand for balance and flexibility.”

Adds Evelyne Steward, VP, Lifeworks and Inclusion for Discovery, “What were once regarded as ‘soft’ benefits are now critical to attracting and retaining top talent at any company. By providing our employees with flexible working opportunities, college tuition assistance, financial planning tools and wellness programs, just to name a few, Discovery is meeting the expectations of professionals today and creating a culture that values both professional and personal success.”

Stay tuned for part 2 of our findings in next week’s Cynopsis jobs report.
