Google Bomb: A Google bomb is an attempt to make a specific search engine query turn up a website for an unexpected organization or individual (usually for the sake of humor). Google bombs involve the creation of numerous links to a website from pages that include the search term. A good example came in 2007, when Stephen Colbert managed to have Google declare him the “Greatest Living American.”

Under Chairman Ajit Pai, the FCC’s net neutrality rules aren’t long for this world – and the industry sees the writing on the wall. Now Netflix, previously a strong backer of the agency’s open internet rules, appears to be throwing in the towel. “It’s not our primary battle at this point,” said CEO Reed Hastings at Recode’s Code Conference. “I think Trump’s FCC is going to unwind the rules no matter what anybody says.”

ADVERTISING
 
NBC News has begun rolling out new display ads that remain in view longer than the one-second minimum required by the IAB’s guidelines. Created in-house by NBC, the ads initially debuted on two verticals – the tech-focused Mach and the health and wellness-focused Better. The new units come in two types: A “ping pong” unit that runs through a sequence of images as users scroll down a page, and custom display units that can resize themselves for any given device. NBC News says it aims to bring the ad offerings to more sites and verticals soon.
 
 
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
 
Say goodbye to Sense8. Netflix canceled the globetrotting sci-fi series after two seasons and one Christmas special. Created by The Wachowskis, Sense8 debuted in 2015. Sense8’s astronomical costs likely played a role in its cancellation: The show’s second season cost an estimated $9 million per episode.
 
News of Sense8’s cancellation comes about about a week after the streaming giant canceled the Baz Luhrmann-produced hip-hop series The Get Down. While Netflix has had a reputation for renewing most of its shows in the past, you can expect the new trend to continue. CEO Reed Hastings made that very clear with some recent remarks at Code Conference. “Our hit ratio is way too high right now,” he said. “I’m always pushing the content team. We have to take more risk.” "You have to try more crazy things,” he added, “because we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”
 
 
PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
 
In a limited-time special sale, Apple’s iTunes lowered the price for a number of classic films to $4.99. That’s as much as a 62% discount for some titles. Titles covered under the $4.99 offering include Lawrence of Arabia, Back to the Future, and a slew of others. In addition, Apple offered 10-film classic film bundles, grouped by decade, for a limited-time price of $19.99.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 
A big new hire for NBC: The network has named Steven Hein as its new SVP of Digital Content. In the new role, Hein will oversee development and production for all digital-native content. That includes NBC’s upcoming short Snapchat shows based on The Voice and other linear series, as well as other digital extensions. Hein will report to Rob Hayes, NBC Entertainment’s VP of Digital. Hein most recently served as Head of Programming and Production for Legendary Digital Networks.
 
Does Bozoma Saint John plan to leave Apple Music? That’s what Axios is reporting, though the news site doesn’t quote anyone on the record. Saint John is Apple Music’s Head of Global Consumer Marketing; she made a big splash with a well-received presentation at last year’s Worldwide Developer Conference. If news of her departure is true, it comes at a pivotal moment for the platform. Later this year, in an effort to set itself apart from the likes of Spotify and Pandora, Apple Music is making its first major foray into original video content with the debut of two original series. One would think that the service might like to have a marketing chief on-board right about now.
 
Video analytics company Tubular Labs has named Pat Williams as its new Chief Revenue Officer. A veteran in sales and revenue operations, Williams has previously held positions at companies including Evolv Inc. and Vivisimo. He most recently worked as Chief Revenue Officer at NetBase Solutions, a data analytics company that works with agencies and brands.
 
Rooster Teeth Games , a division of the Fullscreen-owned digital production company Rooster Teeth, has named a new exec. Gaming industry vet David Eddings will service as Head of Game Publishing. He previously served as VP of Business Development at Gearbox Software, the creator of franchises such as Borderlands and Duke Nukem. Rooster Teeth Games launched this past January; the unit aims to help independent game developers market and distribute titles to Rooster Teeth’s fans and subscribers.
