IN THE NEWS The 2019 midseason schedule for CW is starting to gel, with new series Roswell, New Mexico arriving Tuesday, January 15, at 9p, and Black Lightning shifting to Mondays after Arrow starting Monday, January 21, at 9p. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow returns to Mondays in April after the season two finale of Lightning. New series In the Dark is currently slated to debut on Thursdays after Legacies completes its first full 16-episode season, and Jane the Virgin will return for its final season on Wednesday nights in the spring once All American wraps. Former NFLer Tim Tebow will host upcoming CBS competition series Million Dollar Mile, currently in production in LA. Joining Tebow as sports commentators are Matt “Money” Smith, the voice of the LA Chargers, and ESPN reporter Maria Taylor. Contestants on the show, from exec producer LeBron James, brave a challenging course as they vie for a $1 million prize. MTV is expanding its global live events business into the U.S. with the acquisition of SnowGlobe Music Festival, the annual three-day outdoor New Year’s Eve event in South Lake Tahoe, California. “With SnowGlobe, MTV is taking the natural next step in its resurgence by expanding deeper into live events, as we continue to reach our fans and capitalize on our strong brand in new ways,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo. “In a festival space where many events have become indistinguishable, SnowGlobe stands out with a unique mix of music, sports, and art.” After Fox Business Network senior correspondent Charlie Gasparino reported that “pressure is mounting on the Department of Justice to investigate alleged antitrust violations committed by Comcast,” President Trump weighed in. Gasparino said that the American Cable Association sent a letter demanding an investigation, citing “substantial competitive harm” Comcast provided to consumers, prompting Trump to tweet that the ACA “has big problems with Comcast” and that the 2011 Comcast-NBCU merger has “much more potential for damage to consumers” than the AT&T/Time Warner deal. Comcast responded to the ACA’s letter, saying it is without merit “and constitutes an inappropriate attempt to gain leverage in the commercial marketplace.” Cinedigm Media struck a content partnership with Bridgestone Media Group for family-friendly programming for its faith-based Dove Channel. The deal includes 60 titles. |

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Digital studio Portal A has greenlit two pilots, part of a program aimed at bringing show formats directly to fans. “Some of the most groundbreaking series in recent memory – from Insecure to Broad City – have come as a result of creative talent bypassing the traditional gatekeepers and taking an idea directly to the audience,” said Nate Houghteling, EP at Portal A. Pilots include horror/comedy Hey Guys, told in Instagram format, and Alt Web, a docu-series dedicated to stranger-than-fiction stories born on the Internet. Marti Noxon (UnReal, Sharp Objects) struck an overall deal with Netflix to produce new series programming through her Tiny Pyro. The streamer also gets a first-look option on feature projects. “Her work is often both brave and vulnerable, with a distinct voice, sense of humor and tone that is uniquely her own,” said Cindy Holland, VP, Original Content. [Lynn: Capping to match elsewhere] HBO has a comedy in development starring and produced by David Spade, reports Deadline. Series centered on a former grunge musician/heroin addict now working as a waiter comes from Diablo Cody and her Vita Vera Films, and Jason Reitman and his Right of Way. NEW & RETURNING SERIES CBS All Access gave a straight-to-series order for true crime drama Interrogation. Each episode is taken from an interrogation in real police files and aimed at turning the viewer into a detective. All of the first nine episodes will be available to watch in any order. “Interrogation pushes the boundaries of what a television series can be with its truly unique format,” said Julie McNamara, EVP, Original Content [Lynn: note” Uc here], CBS All Access. “It’s also a series that could only be executed with the technical capabilities of a streaming service.” Guest judges for season four of VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars include Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy), Jenifer Lewis (black-ish), country music singer/songwriter Kasey Musgraves, Frances Bean Cobain, SNL’s Cecily Strong and Felicity Huffman (American Crime), among others. Next round begins Friday, December 14, at 8p. Lifetime is starting off the new year with the two-hour season eight premiere of Married at First Sight, on Tuesday, January 1, at 9p, following a matchmaking special at 8p. Also making comebacks: The Rap Game, returning for season five on Thursday, January 10, at 9p, and Bring It!, launching season six on Thursday, January 17, at 10p. Pure, a drama set in the Mennonite community and focused on a man trying to shield his family from a crime syndicate, makes its debut on WGN America on Wednesday, January 23, at 10p. truTV’s Those Who Can’t returns for season three on Monday, January 14, at 10p. The net’s first scripted project follows a high school faculty more inept that the kids they teach. Wall Street Journal editor-at-large Gerry Baker is headed to Fox Business Network. WSJ At Large with Gerry Baker will air Fridays at 9:30p, starting November 30, and feature industry leaders “impacting Wall Street, Washington and business in America,” said the net. COMING UP Oprah Winfrey Special: Michelle Obama airs Thursday, November 15, at 8p on OWN. Obama first appeared on the show six years ago. One-hour special Big Questions, Huge Answers with Jon Dore premieres Monday, December 3, at 11:30p on Comedy Central. Canadian comedian Dore workshops “creative, if foolhardy” solutions to the threats of cyberbullying and predatory teachers. ID special A Murder in Mansfield explores the 1989 murder case of Noreen Boyle, in which a 12-year-old boy’s testimony helped convict his dad. 26 [Lynn: Okay starting a sentence with a figure here?] years later, Collier Boyle returns to confront his imprisoned father. The series’ 10-episode first season dropped October 26. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee special Holiday on I.C.E.! airs Wednesday, December 19, at 10:30p on TBS. Three-time Olympic Gold hockey star Jennifer Botterill scored a job on the MSG Networks [Lynn: Okay without possessive apostrophe?] broadcast team as a studio analyst for about 20 New York Islanders telecasts, starting with the Islanders/Canucks game tonight on MSG+. DIGITAL YouTube’s creator economy is endangered by the EU’s efforts to revise its copyright directive, which holds internet companies directly responsible for any copyright infringement in the content shared on the platform, said YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki in a blog post Monday. “While we support the goals of article 13, the European Parliament’s current proposal will create unintended consequences that will have a profound impact on the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people,” writes Wojcicki. “The parliament’s approach is unrealistic in many cases because copyright owners often disagree over who owns what rights. If the owners cannot agree, it is impossible to expect the open platforms that host this content to make the correct rights decisions.” Barbra Streisand and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro are onboard the movement to #SaveFilmStruck, WarnerMedia’s streamer of classic, independent, cult and art house films that’s set to fold on November 29. Turner and WB Digital Networks said, in explaining the shuttering, that while FilmStruck has a very loyal fan base, “it remains a niche service.” Argues Kevin Bahr, creator of the petition, on Change.org, “This was not about creating the next Netflix of Hulu, this was about preserving the art of film from all walks of life through the years.” At press time, the petition was about to hit 50,000 signatures. Students who cut their daily use of Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram to ten minutes per day in a recent study from the University of Pennsylvania experienced significant declines in loneliness and depression. “It is ironic, but perhaps not surprising, that reducing social media, which promised to help us connect with others, actually helps people feel less lonely and depressed,” said the study. Many users found themselves unable to access or post to Facebook services including WhatsApp and Instagram at one point on Monday. The cause was a routine test, explained Facebook. “We quickly investigated and restored access for everyone,” said Facebook. Outdoor Sportsman Group has partnered with Africam.com, a website and online platform promoting conservation and awareness, to provide a live look into the native habitat of African wildlife. Live coverage can be viewed on OutdoorChannel.com. Football stars past and present Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Harris Burton, Ronnie Lott and Marshawn Lynch are appearing in PSAs supporting Common Sense’s #DeviceFreeDinner campaign. “Research shows that kids and adults alike feel addicted to their devices, and our need to constantly check them undermines family connections,” said James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense, a nonprofit dedicated to helping kids thrive amid media and technology. “Family interaction, including eating meals together, is critical for children's social and intellectual development.” Addressing the growing popularity of podcasts and streaming music services, Oath is adding programmatic audio inventory to its Oath Ad Platforms technology unit, allowing for real-time targeting and contextual targeting. SoundCloud and TargetSpot will be the inventory sources for the product. Imran Kahn, former chief strategy officer Snap, plans to launch an online commerce startup next year, reports Recode. Unlike Amazon, the platform would likely focus on specialized product categories. Classic movie and TV streaming service The Film Detective inked three new partnerships, teaming with Kit Parker Films, VCI Entertainment and Independent International Pictures to add more than 1,000 new titles. The Film Detective is available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and all iOS devices and available to stream for free, with ads, on app platforms and online, MEASUREMENT A+E Networks and AMC Networks are beta-testing Comscore Campaign Ratings, a program launched in September with 12 media brand partners. “As consumers are engaging with History, Lifetime and A&E programming across multiple platforms, it is important that we understand and measure the impact of advertising,” said Don Robert, EVP, research at A+E Networks. CASTING Hannah James (Mercy Street) will recur on CW’s Supergirl as Nia Nal’s older sister, and Kate Burton (Scandal) will guest-star as Nia’s mother…. GOING GLOBAL London-based UK-China media group Media Pioneers signed key Chinese deals for kids’ properties The Moe Show and Pop Up and drama series Taboo. Online retailer Alibaba will air the three shows on its digital platform, while Youku has picked up the rights to all three series for broadcast this year. Turkish Radio and Television’s international news platforms, TRT World and TRT Arabi are partnering with OTT mobile entertainment platform OONA, which rewards viewers with a virtual currency for watching and sharing content. The deal means TRT World and TRT Arabi are now available to 185 million OONA subscribers across Indonesia. Amazon is adding anime offering FunimationNow to its line-up of Prime Video Channels, becoming the first Sony Pictures Television service to launch on Prime Video in the UK. [Lynn: U.S. was pointed above; U.K. likewise?] KIDS CORNER Discovery is launching a new STEM shop under its new brand extension, Discovery #Mindblown, at the FAO Schwarz flagship store, opening November in NYC.
