PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Netflix ramped up its investment in original content across Europe, ordering its first Belgian original, Into the Night, by Narcos and Scandal producer Jason George. George has written all six episodes and will serve as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Tomek Baginski (The Witcher) and Jacek Dukaj, whose novel, The Old Axolotl, is the inspiration behind the drama. Renny Harlin and Daljit DJ Parmer’s Extraordinary Entertainment tapped John Fusco (Marco Polo) to write, executive produce and showrun its first international TV project, The Successor. The event series centers on the Triads, the network of organized crime syndicates with an increasingly global reach. True Royalty TV commissioned Meghan for President?, a documentary exploring the global appeal and power of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle. It will include interviews with celebrities, media and royal experts. HBO Sports and NFL Films are teaming on Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching, a feature-length film about the four-decade friendship between football coaches Bill Belichick and Nick Saban. The pair grant unprecedented camera access to their annual coaching retreat, where they share conversation about their interwoven history, admiration, coaching philosophies and more. It’s slated air in December on HBO. Fox has issued a script commitment to Saloon, an animated western comedy from writers Elliot Kalan (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series) and Fox Entertainment-owned SideCar Content Accelerator, run by Gail Berman. The project, written by Kalan and Jaffe, centers on Kevin (a woman), who runs a local saloon on Timmy’s Town and functions as the townspeople’s unofficial leader, therapist and protector. Also on the agenda at Fox: The Perfect Couple, a one-hour mystery drama based on Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel, according to Deadline. The Perfect Couple centers around wedding season on Nantucket, where one pair’s nuptials end in disaster before it can begin, when a body is discovered in the harbor hours before the ceremony. Industrial Media expanded its relationship with Todd Hurvitz, veteran series creator, showrunner and executive producer, via an overall deal. Hurvitz will collaborate with Industrial Media’s CEO, Eli Holzman, and President, Aaron Saidman, to develop original series and produce content in various formats. Hurvitz is currently showrunner of Nickelodeon hit series, The Substitute, which is produced by Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation. The project, which is set to launch next spring, features Hemsworth as a terminally ill man desperate to provide for his pregnant wife, who agrees to participate in a deadly game where he discovers he’s not the hunter but the prey. STREAMING Vudu delves into original content with Mr. Mom, a TV series reboot of the 1983 Michael Keaton film, on Thursday, September 12. The ad-supported streaming service, owned by Walmart since 2010, plans to begin rolling out more original material geared to “heartland” consumers, families and other groups. According to Bloomberg and other sources, Walmart is taking a moderate approach to content development, spending a few hundred thousand to a few million per title. TECH TALK Facebook unveiled new tools and updates for Messenger. While still in testing phase, one feature affords real-time appointment booking through Messenger that allows businesses to integrate their existing calendar booking software to power booking. Also, a new lead generation template is designed to make it easier for businesses to create automated experience to help qualify leads within Messenger. From there, they can continue conversation with potential customers in Messenger and integrate with existing CRM tools to track leads. In addition to these new tools, Facebook is also updating some of Messenger’s platform policies with a goal toward encouraging more personalized and relevant conversations between businesses and consumers. YouTube’s crackdown on hateful content resulted in a spike of videos and channels purged during the second quarter of 2019. In a blog post on Tuesday, the Google-owned video giant said the policy change led to a fivefold increase in the number of videos (111,185) and channels (17,818) removed in Q2 for hate-speech violations compared with previous typical quarters. It also noted that total comments removed in the quarter nearly doubled to about 538 million, in part as a result of the updated policy. The video platform announced an update to its hate-speech policy in June that banned content “alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status.” PODCAST POSTS Spotify and Parcast launched 12 new daily podcasts on Tuesday, one for each sign of the zodiac. GOING GLOBAL Mark Cherry’s Why Women Kill is headed to France, following a deal with CBS Studios International. The CBS All Access drama, marking the Desperate Housewives creator and EP’s return to television, is set to launch on French commercial broadcaster M6. Rebel Wilson is going to the dogs. The Hustle and Bridesmaids star will host Australian reality competition series Pooch Perfect for Network Seven. It follows ten professional dog stylists competing in a series of themed challenges to transform their beloved pets. All3Media secured global sales rights to Pili Pala to premiere on Welsh broadcaster S4C later this month. The four-part drama, which will be known internationally as Butterfly Breath and stars Sian Reese Williams, follows the story of a fetal consultant, a pregnant woman and a midwife, and the life-changing repercussions of decision that goes against recommended medical procedures. Global announced its fall season premieres. Among the highlights are new drama Prodigal Son, which centers on a criminal psychologist whose father is one of the worst serial killers; and Michelle and Robert King’s haunting series Evil, which puts science and religion to the test when extraordinary occurrences appear. RATINGS With the new 2019-2020 broadcast TV season about a month away, traditional broadcast TV networks continue a mostly steady decline in viewers. For the 11-month period spanning September 2018 through August 2019, NBC leads in in 18-49 prime-time viewers, while, CBS tops total viewers. NBC posts a Nielsen 1.4 rating/ 7 share in the key 18-49 category that many advertisers still desire, but it’s down 22% in ratings versus the same period the year before. CBS ranks second place in 18-49 Nielsen with 1.3/6, numbers that are virtually the same versus a year ago. ABC and Fox are tied for third with 1.2/6.
