The rate of cord-cutting will slow in 3Q19, predicts MoffettNathanson’s Craig Moffett. Following a quarter in which the US pay-TV business lost over 1.5 million subscribers, what’s left of the satellite subscriber base is “inevitably becoming more rural and therefore (presumably) stickier,” wrote Moffett, and overall, “eventually, the customers who most wanted to leave will have left.”
 
The Late Late Show host James Corden extended his deal with CBS through August  2022. “James Corden has burned his way to the top of American television with a daring, energetic and inventive broadcast that stands out in the late-night space,” said David Nevins, Chief Creative Officer for CBS. “He is a host and performer whose considerable talents shine on every stage, and he has created a cutting-edge comedy factory with shows that have resonated across multiple platforms.” Corden took over the late night show in 2015.
 
Carrie Underwood will host the 53rd Annual CMA Awards, but she won’t be joined by Brad Paisley, her co-host for the last 11 years. Instead, special guest hosts Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton will take the stage. Said Paisley via Twitter, “As a fan of all 3 of these amazing women, I can’t wait to watch.” He’ll be able to do that on Wednesday, November 13 at 8p.
 
Niecy Nash (When They See Us) will host BET’s 2019 Black Girls Rock! Awardsairing September 8.“We are celebrating Black women who serve the world with style, grace, class and sass!” said Nash. “Our honorees are truly shining bright. In a room full of Black girl magic anything could happen! This is going to be an amazing event!”
 
ESPN and the National Women’s Soccer League struck a deal for worldwide rights, excluding the U.S., for regular season and play-off matches. “This is an important step for NWSL to strengthen the league’s reach through ESPN’s international network,” said NWSL President Amanda Duffy. “Our partnership with ESPN has already brought NWSL’s world-class competition into more homes and to more fans here in the United States. Expanding the network’s distribution internationally will continue to elevate the profile and visibility of NWSL around the world.”
 
HBO MAX picked up Let Them All Talk (working title), an original film directed by Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and written by Deborah Eisenberg, starring Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen and Dianne Weist (Life in Pieces), about an author who takes a journey with friends to heal old wounds.“This is the kind of project where you just say yes please sign me up,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content, HBO Max. 
 
Twitter says it will no longer accept advertising from state-controlled news media entities, and is suspending nearly accounts believed to be tied to a Chinese disinformation campaign against pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong. “This policy will apply to news media entities that are either financially or editorially controlled by the state,” Twitter said.

VH1 greenlit new seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.
Drag Race will return for season twelve, while All Stars will be back for season five. Both series are produced by World of Wonder Productions.  
 
Netflix ordered dramedy Sex/Life from Stacey Rukeyser (UnReal), based on BB Easton’s book 44 Chapters About Men. Rukeyser is showrunner and EP.
 
Bodega Animation has added Tiny Industries to its roster. Tiny Industries specializes in character driven storytelling across multiple distribution platforms. 
 
HBO Max issued pilot orders for drama The Rules of Magic; dramedy Generation; and YA drama Redbird Lane. The streaming service is slated to launch in spring 2020.
 
Kevin Smith has a new anime He-Man series series in the works for Netflix, called Masters of the Universe: Revelation. “I’m Eternia-ly grateful to MattelTV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith said. “In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor!” Smith will serve as showrunner and EP.

ID’s Deadline: Crime with Tamron Hall returns for a new season Sunday, September 8 at 10p. First episode focuses on a woman who reads about a murder, and suspects her husband had something to do with it.
 
Season eight of Universo’s Larrymania launches Sunday, September 15 at 9p. Celeb-reality series follows Regional Mexican singer Larry Hernandez and his wife Kenia Ontiveros.
 
Radio host Angie Martinez sits down with hip hop royalty in Untold Stories Of Hip Hop, premieringThursday, September 26 at 10p on WE tv. Interviewees include Cardi B, Snoop DoggQueen LatifahIce Cube, NellyA$AP RockyDJ KhaledWyclef JeanJa RuleFat Joe and more.
 
COMING UP
 
Telemundo will air the 5th annual “Latin American Music Awards on Thursday, October 17 at 8p, preceded by a one-hour red carpet pre-show. Three-hour special showcases musical performances in English and Spanish; nominees will be announced on Wednesday, September 4.
 
Durham’s Southern Documentary Fund will be hosting the first regional Black Media Story Summit on Sept. 8 in Durham. The regional events are a forum for Black media professionals, technology partners, funders and other thought leaders and community advocates to discuss how to improve the current state and future of Black storytelling.
 
STREAMING
 
dick clark productions, Tubefilter and YouTube are joining forces for the 9th Annual Streamy Awards. Ceremony takes place at the Beverly Hilton on Friday, December 13 and will stream globally on YouTube.
 
The Walt Disney Company confirmed global launch dates for Disney+ in Canada, The Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand, and has reached global agreements with nearly all the major platforms to distribute the app across partner mobile and connected TV devices. Global rollout begins November 12, in tandem with the US rollout, with expectations to launch in most major global markets within the first two years.
 
Xumo’s app is now an available on Android TV devices, including the Nvidia Shield media player and select Sony connected TVs. “We’re focused on bringing our service to the most popular devices available and have expanded to a record number of new platfoms this year alone,” said Chris Hall, SVP of product.
 
Wurl has partnered with Outside TV to deliver and monetize Outside TV+ to select OTT platforms. Since working with Wurl, Outside TV has reduced its operating costs, achieved 38% user growth, and secured more than 100 minutes of viewing per viewer session.  
 
pocket.watch announced they are a featured partner for Kids & Family on The Roku Channel. As part of the partnership, pocket.watch will premiere exclusive content from YouTube kid creator Ryan of Ryan Toys Review. The five, 22-minute ad-supported specials will be available free of charge as part of Kids & Family on The Roku Channel until November 19. pocket.watch is also launching a linear channel for families featuring long-form shows, hosted blocks of short-form videos, interstitials, and originals.
 
Curiosity Stream will be available to Altice USA’s 4.9 million customers, and the science and history streamer’s app will be added to Altice’s digital operating system. CurisityStream launched in 2015.

UK distributor Cineflix Rights added Channel 4 series Let’s Talk About Sex, from Spelthorne Community Television, and Extreme Tribe: The Last Pygmies, from Renegade Pictures, to its factual slate.

Alfred Haber, Inc. has secured the exclusive international distribution rights for the 20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.The event will air live on Univision in the US on Thursday, Nov. 14, and will include bthe three-hour awards event as well as a pre-show.
 
Gusto Worldwide Media is launching a content block in the Philippines with 100 new hours of original food programming. It’s the second deal Gusto has signed with Asian Cable Communications Inc.  
 
ADVERTISING
 
Mobile animal brand The Dodo has partnered with pet mess company Resolve to launch a four-course curriculum campaign that offers digital audiences tips for new pet ownership. The Dodo x Resolve Pet School, Resolve’s first custom branded content campaign, runs across The Dodo’s Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram channels as well as on a dedicated Dodo hub. Each course includes four custom videos, which are released every two weeks.
 
Malicious ads and surreptitious in-banner video ads were down significantly in 2Q19, according to Confiant’s “Demand Quality Report” for the quarter. Malicious ads fell to 0.25%, down from 0.39% versus the quarter prior, and in-banner video ads dipped to 0.10% from 0.45%. Still, “There continues to be a huge gap between the best and worst performers,” says the report. “Among top SSPs, the worst performer is over 60 times as likely to deliver a malicious ad as the best performer.”
