MTV and Sean “Diddy” Combs are reuniting to bring back Making the Band. The series, which discovers the next breakout superstars, premiered on MTV in 2002 with Combs at the helm. Combs set off a social media firestorm by suggesting the show’s return and the demand was too loud to resist. The new Making the Band is slated to premiere in 2020. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah will go live onTuesday, July 30, and Wednesday, July 31, at 11p on Comedy Central, providing instant analysis and commentary about the Democratic Party’s second 2020 Presidential Primary Debates. Freeform released its lineup for August. The season finale of Sirens bows Thursday, August 1, at 8p, while Grownish wraps its season on Wednesday, August 7, at 8p. Good Trouble airs its summer finale on Tuesday, August 6, at 8p. A&E’s Live Rescue is moving to Thursday nights, with new episodes premiering July 18 at 9p. Hosted by Ashleigh Banfield, the show follows first responders from across the country as they put their lives on the line responding to emergency rescue calls. HGTV is launching “A Very Brady Contest.” Now that the iconic Brady house has been fully renovated into a replica of the original TV set design from The Brady Bunch, the net is giving one lucky winner a chance to enjoy a six-night stay there from December 9 to 15. Evelyn Warfel was upped to Executive Producer/Showrunner of The Price Is Right and John Quinn was appointed the new Executive Producer/Showrunner of Let’s Make a Deal. Amazon nabbed the rights to develop a script-to-series drama on Jack Reacher, the character from Lee Child’s bestselling book series. Scorpion creator Nick Santora is set to write, executive-produce and serve as showrunner. Series is a co-production of Amazon Studios, Skydance Television and Paramount Television. Filmmaker Antoine Fuqua is expanding his work in television, inking an exclusive and multiyear overall production deal with Ben Silverman and Howard Owens’ Propagate reports Deadline. Under the agreement, Fuqua and his production company Fuqua Films will collaborate with Propagate on scripted and non-scripted projects. Quibi announced a new shortform series. The Odd Couple and Reno 911! alum Thomas Lennon will create, write, executive-produce and star in Winos, a workplace comedy. Project focuses on a misguided entrepreneur who, after failing in Silicon Valley, moves into wine country and tries to turn a rundown vineyard into a success. Dan Levy is expanding his relationship with Sony Pictures TV. The Indebted creator signed a two-year overall deal with the studio behind the upcoming NBC comedy series. As per the agreement, Levy will create and develop new projects for the studio via his production company Screaming Elliot Productions. ABC picked up Same Time, Next Christmas from Freeform Studios. The holiday move, set to air in December 2019, stars Lea Michele (Glee) as Olivia Henderson, a young woman who met her childhood sweetheart during her family’s annual Christmas visit to Hawaii. After being separated by distance and years, the two reunite at the same resort years later. Cartoon Network Studios green-lit The Fungies! The Appalachian investigators of mysterious sightings team explores new folklore and hillbilly hauntings in Season 4 of Mountain Monsters, premiering Wednesday, August 21, at 9p. The two-hour special ep airs on Travel Channel. CNBC’s new home renovation series Cash Pad bows Tuesday, July 23, at 10p. STREAMING Acorn TV released its August slate, featuring the return of Welsh drama Keeping Faith’s second season on Friday, August 30, in time for Labor Day weekend. In addition, on Monday, August 5, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess, Parks and Recreation) is back in mystery series My Life Is Murder, while David Suchet returns in Seesaw. On Monday, August 19, crime drama Thorne debuts starring David Morrissey (The Walking Dead, The Missing). Yahoo Sports debuts short-form docu-series Play It Forward from Bright Bay Creative on Monday, July 15. New 11-minute episodes will air on Mondays and Thursdays for eight weeks, featuring NFL superstars including Kirk Cousins, Melvin Gordon, Antonio Brown and Nick Chubb. Digital network Brat, which targets Generation Z, renewed Zoe Valentine. Season 2 of the series will launch this fall, along with Season 4 of Total Eclipse and Season 5 of Chicken Girls. All 13 episodes on 2010 AMC suspense drama Rubicon are now available to AMC Premiere subscribers. The first three episodes of the series are available with commercials on AMC’s various digital platforms including AMC.com and the AMC app to viewers who authenticate through their provider. TECH TALK Last week, Hulu brought back 4K streaming video in limited capacity, after taking down options for Ultra HD viewing in 2018. Hulu confirmed the update on Twitter. At the moment, 4K streaming is only available on Apple TV, fifth generation or later, and Chromecast Ultra devices. And content is limited to Hulu originals. U.S. consumers are expected to spend a combined $26 billion on music and video subscription services this year – up from $20.4 billion in 2018 and nearly twice the amount spent in 2017, according to estimates from the Consumer Technology Association. With the continued success of Apple Music and Spotify, domestic music streaming revenue alone is expected to reach $84 billion in 2019, which is a 33% growth over 2018. Meanwhile, revenue from paid video streaming services is expected to be up 25% year over year, to $17.7 for 2019. The Consumer Technology Association credits live TV services with some of the momentum for paid video streaming. KID STUFF A report from Hopster analyzing the top 50 preschool shows on PSB’s and SVODS found that they are severely lacking in representation and have high rates of gender stereotyping, pushing BAME characters to the background. Among the findings: Disability representation is minimal and some negative stereotypes persist. Working-class families appeared in just 9% of episodes while being 50% of the actual population. Gender stereotypes are numerous, with female characters seen to be objectified and, in some cases, undermined by male characters. There were no same-sex parent families and there was little evidence of LGBT+. Ethnic minorities were only included in around half of the content examined and often in the background. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS Spanish-language seven-channel pack EspanaTV, from AMC Networks International Southern Europe and ATRESMEDIA Internacional, launches on DTH and IPTV Portugal on July 22 on MEO, one of the country’s biggest pay-TV operators. Silver Gate Media inked a deal with Wanda Kidsland for educational animated series Monkey with a Tool Belt. Wanda Kidsland will manage distribution and tie-in publishing, consumer products and live attractions for the show in China to establish the brand in the market and build a fanbase. TCB Media Rights moves into feature-length documentaries following a deal with U.K. producer Top Hat Productions. The London-based distributor has also commissioned documentary The $50m Art Swindle from producer Conscious Life. |
