The network is premiering its first scripted feature-length film, Capsized: Blood in the Water, starring Josh Duhamel, followed by “fincredible” documentary programming set to scare you out of the water all week long. In addition, the network is engaging fans on digital and social media platforms through partnerships with nonprofit groups, affiliates, education programs and more. At this stage, we’re surprised the whole event isn’t a national holiday. Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith are launching Westbrook, Inc ., a cross-platform holding company that will encompass subsidiary companies including Overbrook Entertainment, Red Table Talk Enterprises, Westbrook Studios, Westbrook Media and Good Goods. The company is designed to allow the Smiths to “ fully immerse ourselves in all areas of the media and entertainment space. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Katherine Heigl is set to star and executive-produce Firefly Lane , a drama series based on the Kristin Hannah novel, with showrunner/co-executive producer Maggie Friedman. The show focuses on two best friends and their complicated relationship; Heigl plays one-half of that inseparable set, the troubled Tully. Hannah is also executive-producing. Pilgrim Media Group (a division of Lionsgate) and World Surf League’s new studio division, WSL Studios, are joining forces for a co-development deal to produce surf-centric sport and lifestyle content across multiple formats and platforms. Makeready has a non-exclusive two-year deal with Hiro Murai , who directed Donald Glover’s This Is America video and the Amazon musical Guava Island, which starred Glover and Rihanna. Murai and manager/producing partner Nate Matteson have created production company Super Frog, and Makeready will provide independent financing for features and non-traditional format content. Pop TV has given an eight-episode order to the coming-of-age comedy pilot Best Intentions, from Adam Herz (American Pie writer), A+E Studios and Howard T. Owens and Ben Silverman’s Propagate. Production is expected to begin this fall. Decades Television Network is set to launch on 12 Fox O&O TV stations in Q3 of this year. Fox Television Stations has reached a multi-year agreement to carry the Weigel Broadcasting Co.’s network, which will launch on Fox stations in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, Detroit, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Austin and Gainesville. HGTV kicked off a new renovation competition series, Rock the Block , in July. The show, which films around LA, will give renovation experts from the network a chance to face off in a “design battle royale” as they take identical properties and turn them into suburban oases. The show will be hosted by Property Brothers host Drew Scott and is set to premiere in the fall of 2019. NEW & RETURNING SERIES Shondaland’s first original scripted series for Netflix is coming in 2020, two years after producer Shonda Rhimes moved her deal from ABC to the streaming service. The cast of Bridgerton, a scripted soap by Scandal writer Chris Van Dusen, will run for eight episodes and is based on Julia Quinn’s novels. Julie Andrews is set to voice the unseen gossip writer Lady Whistledown, while Rege-Jean Page (For the People) will play the eligible bachelor pursued by local ladies. Ready for some fresh Masked Singer costumes? Well, now we know what the hidden warblers will be hiding in when the Fox breakout hit returns for a second season: Egg, Leopard, Flamingo, Skeleton and Eagle. The reality competition show was the season’s No. 1 new series and top unscripted show and is based on a South Korean format. Masked Singer returns on Sept. 25 on Fox. AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson has a new music series on AXS TV. Brian Johnson: A Life on the Road first aired in the U.K. on Sky Arts and will premiere on Sept. 15. Smithsonian Channel is set to spotlight the homes of Britain’s nobility in An American Aristocrat’s Guide to Great Estates in a new series. Each hourlong episode will follow host Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, as she looks into the lifestyles of the owners, staff and craftspeople who maintain the estates. The series is produced by Nutshell TV for Smithsonian Networks and will premiere in 2020. Investigation Discovery announced that Season 2 of the 44 Blue Productions and Khloe Kardashian-produced series Twisted Sisters will premiere on August 12. ADVERTISING Nielsen is launching the Nielsen Podcast Listener Buying Power Service through its Nielsen Scarborough division, with iHeartMedia, Cadence13, Midroll, Westwood One and cabana as charter clients. The new service will provide podcasters and brands with insights that match listeners by genre with their buying habits. The service has an effective sample of nearly 30,000 respondents and uses targeted questions on more than 12 podcast genres, more than 2,000 retail/plan-to-buy categories and hundreds of advertisers. The reports will be generated via web-based software and will be released twice a year. Content logistics company MAZ has announced a new partnership with Flowplayer , a best-in-class online video platform designed for publishers. MAZ will offer clients access to Flowplayer’s video player, while Flowplayer’s users will have access to the distribution channels provided by MAZ. “With this partnership, video creators and publishers can get more reach from each piece of content,” says CMO Wayne Congar. “They can upload once with Flowplayer and distribute everywhere with MAZ.” STREAMING Snapchat has added more shows and contributors to its content community, with the first of its newly conceived Creator Shows premiering Wednesday. The social network has added Arnold Schwarzenegger, Serena Williams and Kevin Hart to its creator list as it aims to capitalize on its young viewing audience. Snapchat also announced its Animated Comedy Creator Initiative, which asks creators to pitch a one-page treatment; the network will green-light as many as 10 shows from the submissions. Scripted Comedy Creator Shows are scheduled to debut through the summer and into the fall. Darren Criss (The Assassination of Gianni Versace) is set to star, EP and write songs for Royalties, a musical comedy series focusing on a pair of songwriters for shortform streaming platform Quibi. It’s the first sale for SideCar, the Fox Entertainment company headed by Gail Berman. Quibi has announced an unscripted series Fight Like a Girl , which will be headlined by WWE Superstars from WWE Studios and Critical Content. WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon will pair a WWE Superstar with a young woman struggling to overcome a personal issue, the goal being that both emerge tougher, stronger and healthier. Poker Central and partypoker LIVE announced a rights deal for live streaming of partypoker LIVE MILLIONS tour stops on the PokerGo OTT service. The exclusive streaming collaboration kicks off on August 9. KIDS PROGRAMMING The FCC voted Wednesday to ease rules about children’s programming broadcasts. It’s the first update of the “kid-vid” restrictions initially put in place 30 years ago, which ensured that educational programs would be widely available to American families, including through broadcast networks whose signals don’t require a pay-TV subscription. The order starts the window of time when children’s programming can air one hour earlier (6am) and keeps its traditional end time of 10pm. The Republican-led commission voted along party lines, with FCC commissioner Michael O’Rielly saying that the limitations were burdensome in a streaming/online media content world. Democrats on the committee dissented, saying that the new rules only require broadcasters to air less than one hour of children’s programming per month on their most widely viewed stream. Anthony Anderson, Yvette Nicole Brown, Tony Hale and other funny folk are set to star in the upcoming live one-hour special Mo Willems & the Storytime All-Stars Present Don't Let the Pigeon Do Storytime, which will record at the John F. PODCAST POSTS Podcasts are hotter than ever, Gary Reisman , CEO of podcast producer Forever Dog, told Cynopsis in a recent conversation. Instagram is battling online bullies with two new features. In the first, artificial intelligence will be used to flag comments that “might be considered offensive,” giving users a chance to undo a nasty comment before it posts. The second will allow people to restrict users looking at their account without resorting to blocking. “We’ve heard from young people in our community that they’re reluctant to block, unfollow or report their bully because it could escalate the situation,” said Instagram head Adam Mosseri. France’s TF1 Studio has partnered with Globalgate Entertainment , the Lionsgate-affiliated local-language film and TV production and financing venture. RATINGS Fox continues to do well in the ratings — over at Showtime that is , where the new limited series The Loudest Voice, chronicling the rise of the “fair and balanced” network topped 2 million viewers in replays, streaming and on-demand. That’s a 602% rise from its first linear airing, which Nielsen says drew just 618,000 viewers. Meanwhile, Big Little Lies and Euphoria have both done well for HBO; Lies drew 2.8M total viewers to its fifth episode of the second season, while Euphoria drew 1.2M total. CBS’ Love Island is on five nights a week but debuted Tuesday to lackluster numbers, watched by just 2.68 million viewers.
