A live drawing on CNN on July 18 will decide which of the 20 eligible candidates - who will be notified they’ve made the cut on July 17 - appear on which evening. The debates will also stream live without requiring log-in to a cable provider. E.W Scripps has launched a $400 million private placement offering to finance the acquisition of eight stations in seven markets that are being divested as part of Nexstar Media Group’s pending acquisition of Tribune Media. The Scripps deal will grow the company’s local television station portfolio to 62 stations in 42 markets with a reach of 30% of U.S. TV households. 24NEWS is expanding its coverage in the U.S. to include top national news stories and increased live coverage from the U.S. The global current affairs news network from Altice USA will now deliver both global and domestic news, including the in-depth international and Middle Eastern news coverage as well as national breaking and headline news. Univision Communications is relaunching its multi-platform sports media brand and cable sports network as TUDN (from Univision Deportes Network) on Saturday, July 20. Former champion Paralympian swimmer Victoria Arlen will co-host season two of American Ninja Warrior Junior, premiering on Universal Kids in early 2020. ADVERTISING TV will drop to 26.5% of global ad spend in 2021 from 30.8% in 2018, according to projections form Publicis Media’s Zenith. Internet display advertising will be the top medium, while OOH will maintain its 6.5% share of advertising spend. The biggest spender on OTT local advertising is the automotive category, according to 1Q19 data from ZypMedia. Cars were followed by Home & Garden, and Health & Fitness. Also of note: 59% of all OTT campaigns ran for a duration of one month or shorter. The personal finance category averaged the shortest campaign length, at two months, while Law, Government & Politics was the longest, at over six months. Eighty-seven percent of the top 30 advertisers that ran spots during the Women’s World Cup also did so during the Men’s World Cup last year, according to a MediaRadar study. “Looking at how top industries spent TV ad dollars on each tournament, we notice several similarities, but also some differences,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO and Co-Founder of MediaRadar. “Industries such as Retail and Media & Entertainment accounted for a similar share of the ad dollars in both tournaments, but then there were industries where the share of spend was noticeably different.” Industries that accounted for a larger share of spend during the men's tournament included Tech, Non-Alcoholic Beverages and Beer, Wine & Spirits, while Finance & Real Estate, Apparel, Home Furnishings and Toiletries & Cosmetics accounted for a larger share of spend during the women’s events. Univision expects this upfront season to be its best in four years, reports Variety, with overall volume up 5-6% versus last year. Last week the company announced its board is exploring “strategic options” that could include a sale. STREAMING Netflix head Ted Sarandos met with some of his film and TV execs last month to say they need to be more budget conscious, according to The Information. Sarandos reportedly told his employees that the numbers of viewers a project will attract will play a bigger part in the greenlight process. COMING UP CBS Evening News’ anchor Norah O’Donnell will interview Caroline Kennedy and Jeff Bezos during her debut broadcast on Monday, July 15. During the joint interview to mark the 50th anniversary month of man’s first moon walk, Kennedy and Bezos will discuss the future of space exploration, as well as President Kennedy’s part in expanding the space program. Cozi TV is pulling two The Office stunts. For the first, on Monday, August 26 at 10p (check local listings), the “Dinner Party” episode will be presented in Smell-A-Vision, via scratch-and-sniff cards. The second event, “A Hardin’s Day Night,” is a marathon focused on episodes featuring Melora Hardin (as Jan Levinson) from 1p-12a. TECH TALK TiVo has renewed its agreement with Canada’s Shaw Communications, in a deal that expanded Shaw’s Rovi patent portfolio IP license deal to also cover the TiVo patent portfolio. “We’re happy to renew our agreements with TiVo, which reinforces our commitment to providing advanced entertainment offerings to our customers across Canada,” said Jay Mehr, president of Shaw Communications. Instagram is battling online bullies with two new features. In the first, artificial intelligence will be used to flag comments that “might be considered offensive,” giving users a chance to undo a nasty comment before it posts. The second will allow people to restrict users looking at their account, without resorting to blocking. “We’ve heard from young people in our community that they’re reluctant to block, unfollow or report their bully because it could escalate the situation,” said Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
