PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Amazon Studios ordered animated series Invincible from The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and artist Ryan Ottley. Based on Kirkman’s comic book series of the same name, the project marks the first series greenlit under the overall deal Amazon Studios struck with Kirkman last year. Apple greenlit Little America, a half-hour anthology series from Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, the Oscar-nominated writers of The Big Sick. Project is inspired by the true stories featured in Epic Magazine and described as a small, collective portrait of America’s immigrants. Sky One renewed buddy cop drama Bulletproof, starring Noel Clarke and Ashley Walters, for a six-part second season. Netflix ordered a sophomore season of Llama Llama. Jennifer Garner leads the voice cast of the preschool cartoon based on the book series by Anna Dewdney from Genius Brands International, which premiered in 20 countries in January. Hulu acquired Crime + Punishment, a doc that goes behind the scenes to expose discriminatory policing practices, intimidation and corruption within the New York Police Department. The project, which debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, went on to win the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking. The streamer will partner with IFC Films to release the documentary simultaneously in theaters and on Hulu on August 24. Millennial and Gen Z men are an exclusive group, but an influential one. Bleacher Report is one brand engaging the demo, with content that goes beyond sports. “Bleacher Report recognized the growing hunger for content that sits at the intersection of sports and culture,” said Ed Romaine, chief brand officer. “Unlike prior generations of sports fans, millennials and Gen Z are thirsty for culture. They have many passion points and seek to engage and cultivate them in a seamless manner.” For more insights from Romaine, as well as speakers from Newsy, Engagement Labs and Adult Swim, register for the July 12 webinar, “Connecting With The New Young Male Demo” here. The Supreme Court agreed to decide whether Apple must face a lawsuit by consumers who allege the App Store’s pricing model violates antitrust laws. The battle focuses on Apple’s app store business model, which calls for a 70-30 revenue split with developers. In a complaint filed in 2011, a group of iPhone users alleged that Apple’s 30% commission from developers got passed on to consumers and that the company was able to charge the markup because it wielded monopoly power over the distribution of iPhone apps. U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, in the North District of California, dismissed the lawsuit in 2014, ruling that developers were the ones affected by the 30% commission. Mediaocean and IBM iX announced the launch of a blockchain consortium for the digital media supply chain. Bringing together some of the world’s largest advertisers, agencies and global business design partners, including Kimberly-Clark, Pfizer, Unilever and IBM Watson Advertising, the group aims to provide transparency and build trust and accountability in the advertising ecosystem. UBS analyst Jon Hodulik predicted that virtual pay TV services, including DirecTV Now, Sling TV and YouTube TV, will collectively have about 9.2 million subscribers by the end of 2018, and that streaming skinny bundles will represent around 25% of all pay TV subscriptions by 2022 – about 24 million users in total. “As these offerings continue to improve - closing programming gaps, adding features and improving transmission quality – and traditional TV consumption falls, we expect the streamers to become increasingly attractive,” noted Hodulik’s report. Roku is setting up an a la carte distribution platform similar to Amazon’s channels offering, according to Variety. Per the report, Roku will establish a dedicated channel for subscription direct-to-consumer program platforms, like CBS All Access and HBO Now, that will let users authenticate, pay for and view content all in one place. GOING GLOBAL Netflix inked its first European overall series deal with Jantie Friese and Baran bo Odar, the German duo behind Dark. The twosome will produce projects for the streamer worldwide. TRT World Citizen is launching a week-long campaign commemorating UN’s World Refugee Day today, featuring a number of explainer videos highlighting the lives of refugees living in Turkish camps. In addition, TRT World Citizen staff produced a call-to-action video shedding light on the plight of 10,000 child refugees missing throughout Europe. Acorn TV secured U.S. rights to Australian drama Mystery Road, starring Judy Davis (Feud) and Aaron Pederson (Jack Irish), from All3Media International. Series is slated to air on the SVOD service in August. Free-to-air UK channel Pick greenlit How I Caught the Killer from Woodcut Media. The factual true crime series explores what it’s really like to be a police officer working on murder cases. New international broadcast deals were secured for Acamar Films series Bing, including RAI YoYo in Italy, Fox Kids in Finland, RSI Switzerland, Ceska Televize in the Czech Republic, CJ Korea English Gem Channel in South Korea and Karousel’s O! in Russia. Quintus Media secured a package deal with AMC Networks International Central and North Europe for its Spektrum channel in Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
