PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT BET Network greenlit digital talk series Black Coffee. Hosted by Marc Lamont Hill, the live daily morning show will feature interviews with celebrities, athletes and social media stars. The show is set to premiere on Monday, June 3 at 10a across multiple platforms including YouTube, Facebook Watch, Twitter, BET Now App and Bet.com. Netflix secured an exclusive, multi-year overall deal for scripted series programming with Michael Sugar’s Sugar23, reports Deadline. The agreement includes a first look for unscripted series, as well. It puts Sugar’s TV deal under the same roof as his feature deal, which was inked last October. Happy Valley producer Red Production Company is adapting Jess Phillips’ book, Everywoman: One Woman’s Truth About Speaking the Truth, into a TV drama. Phillips, a rising British political star and critic of Brexit, published the book of stories from her own life in 2017 via Random House. The series will be co-produced by Red, which produces Netflix’s Safe and BBC’s Years and Years, and Lucy Dyke (The Split, Black Mirror). Amazon Studios ordered young adult drama pilot The Wilds from writer-executive producer Sarah Streicher (Daredevil) and ABC Signature Studios. Amy B. Harris will serve as executive producer and showrunner on the project, which is ABC Signature’s first series for Amazon. Described as part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds follows a group of teenage girls from radically different backgrounds after an airplane crash strands them on a deserted island. “These women are all so cool and interesting I need to step up my game!” – direct quote from one of the Top Women in Media judges. DIGITAL DATA Driver Digital Studios has teamed with Alita Friedman, CEO of Alita’s Brand Bar to expand its licensing and content distribution partnerships, including Cool School, a kids’ channel on YouTube and YouTube Kids. As the studio’s official licensing agency, Friedman will seed out and evaluate partnership opportunities across all categories including hard lines, soft lines, live events and entertainment, as well as new content distribution platforms. ESPN+ nabbed exclusive English-language rights to Copa America soccer, which takes place between June 14 and July 7 in Brazil. The entire 26-match tournament will be carried on the subscription streamer in English and Portuguese. Comcast is set to launch a new commercial-free, on-demand movie service called Hitz that will replace Cinemax in some channel packages. The service, which will feature over 200 movies from a variety of studios and rotate over time, will be available at part of Xfinity Premier, Super and certain other TV packages at no extra cost. For Xfinity subscribers who still want Cinemax for its original content, Comcast will continue to sell $12-per-month subscriptions to the premium channel. TECH TALK Most adults see technology as the biggest driver of change and think that that’s a good thing, according to findings in the seventh annual trends report by Ford. The report examines the drivers of behavioral change around the world via a survey of 13,000 adults, conducted by Harris Insights and Analytics for Ford. Some 87% of adults say technology is the biggest driver of today’s change, while 79% say that technology is a force for good. However, that doesn’t mean that consumers like all tech prompted change. Some 69% of millennials, 68% of Gen Z, 62% of Gen X and 53% of Baby Boomers would like to undo some behavioral changes that happened because of technology. Apple has been sued by three consumers who live in Rhode Island and Michigan and allege the company violated their privacy by sharing information about their music listening habits with third parties. The lawsuit was filed late last week in California and alleges that Apple has been selling this data directly and also giving iOS app developers access to other related data. The plaintiffs are seeing class-action status for their lawsuit. If found guilty, Apple could be forced to pay damages to residents of the two states who had their music listening habits disclosed. PODCAST POSTS Broadcaster Anna Maria Tremonti will produce and host original projects for CBS Podcasts, starting this fall with a one-on-one interview series. To focus on these ventures, Tremonti is leaving her post as host of CBC Radio One’s The Current on June 21. GOING GLOBAL Indian talk show host and director Karan John is set to host a dating talk show for Netflix in India. What The Love? centers on the wives of Bollywood stars, who discuss their husbands’ careers and struggles, and how their relationships have survived. Filming is expected to begin in 2020. Canal+ Group acquired M7, an independent pay-TV company with operations in Benelux and Central Europe. It marks the largest overseas deal Canal has made in nearly two decades. M7 will give Canal access to new markets and provide a pipeline for its original productions and extensive film library. |
