IN THE NEWS CBS renewed six additional drama series and two news programs for the 2019-20 season. Latest dramas to make the cut are SEAL Team, S.W.A.T., Madam Secretary, Bull, Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver; news shows 60 Minutes and 48 Hours will also be back, bringing the total renewal tally thus far to18 series. Lots of news from yesterday’s Fox investor day. The network is bringing production of its hit series The Masked Singer in-house, said Fox Corp. entertainment chief Charlie Collier, under the new Fox Alternative Entertainment division. The move, which sees Endemol Shine exiting production for the North American incarnation, will bring down the budget for season 2, Collier said. He applauded the series as another risky programming bet that paid off for Fox, noting, “Technically, Masked Singer could have ended up on any platform but you have to note that it didn’t.” Although Collier assured Fox is not looking to morph into a sports-centric network like ESPN, Fox Sports is making a big new sports wager. The company is entering the legalized sports betting arena “ambitiously, aggressively, but also responsibly,” division chief Eric Shanks said yesterday. Fox Bet, in partnership with Canadian gambling outfit The Stars Group, will enable those in states given the green light by the Supreme Court to wager, the ability to bet on live games it airs and will be up and running by football season, Shanks assured.
