PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT Pop TV ordered a pilot for Arranged, from Aline Brosh McKenna (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), writer/producer Sono Patel and CBS Television Studios. Comedy centers on two best friends who enter a marriage of convenience. HBO is prepping a documentary about the life of Senator John McCain, produced and directed by Peter Kunhardt (Jim: The James Foley Story) and his sons, George Kunhardt and Teddy Kunhardt. “Through the years, John has rightly earned the reputation as an American hero,” said Peter Kunhardt. “In the final chapter of his life, he is reminding this generation of what government can and should look like.” Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to vampire drama V-Wars, adapted from the novel. Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder will star, but this time will not be among the undead. The Wrong Mans, based on the 2013 UK series created by and starring Late Late Show host James Corden and Matthew Baynton, landed a pilot production commitment from Showtime. The U.S. version will star Ben Schwartz (House of Lies). Corden will exec produce through his Fulwell 73 Productions along with Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson, and Baynton, writer Ian Maxtone-Graham and the series’ original director, Jim Field Smith. COMING UP Futurama’s Hypnotoad stages a Syfy invasion on Friday, April 20, interrupting Futurama episodes “selected for maximum trip-enhancing effect” from 8p-2a. NEW & RETURNING SERIES Carol Burnett will be joined by “experts” from 4 to 8 years old on Netflix’s A Little Help. The tots will weigh in on the dilemmas of everyday adults as well as celebs. DIGITAL DATA Apparently all you have to do to get many users of ad blockers to turn them off is ask nicely, according data from Google’s Ad Choices initiative, launched in June in beta. Participating publishers are able to address users of ad blocking software and make a customized case for funding journalism. (Or install a gated paywall, or block access to the site.) “Millions of ad blocking users every month are now choosing to see ads on publisher websites, or ‘whitelisting’ that site, after seeing a Funding Choices message,” wrote Google product manager Varun Chirravuri in a blog post, adding that in the last month over 4.5 million visitors who were asked to allow ads said yes, creating over 90 million additional paying page views for those sites. Streaming service Pantaya, a joint venture between Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media Group, is launching a series of comedy specials, Laugh Factory en Espanol. “Laugh Factory en Espanol will bring Latino audiences comedy that reflects their lifestyle and culture and maybe even reminds them of home,” Jaime Davila, president of Campanario Entertainment, tells Cynopsis. “These specials further drive Campanario’s mission of highlighting Latinx people both in front of and behind the camera.” Spanish-language comedy premieres beginning Saturday, April 21. Two new episodes will debut per month for three months. UK-based audio streamer Mixcloud landed a $11.5 million investment from media investment company WndrCo, which counts Jeffrey Katzenberg among its founders. Comedy Central greenlit two Snapchat-themed short-form digital series: Unfilitered, offering a male perspective on manufactured social media personas, and a localized version of Bad Snappers for the Middle East. UFC champions Chuck Liddell and Bas Rutten (Kevin Can Wait) have signed to be announcers, advisors and ambassadors for new OTT pro sports startup Karate Combat. Its first live event, which will feature Bas announcing, will stream from Miami on April 26. Chinese messaging service Sina Weibo (think Twitter) changed course on gay-themed content. After blocking it on Friday as part of a three-month “content clearance” campaign, Weibo reacted to backlash over the weekend by saying it would not prohibit gay topics. “This time, the cleanup of anime and games won’t target gay content,” said Weibo on Monday. “It is mainly to clean up content related to pornography, violence and gore. Thank you for your discussions and suggestions.” SVOD services Quark and XiveTV are now available on Xfinity on Demand on Comcast’s X1 platform, announced Zone-tv. Quark and XiveTV cost $4.99/month.
