IN THE NEWS The CW gave early renewals to all of its returning series, as well as newcomers Dynasty and Black Lightning. Back for season 3 is Riverdale; Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend were picked up for season 4; The Flash and Jane the Virgin landed season 5 orders; Arrow will return for season 7; and Supernatural got an order for season 14. Freshman Valor did not make the cut. “As The CW expands to a six-night, Sunday through Friday schedule next season, we are proud to have such a deep bench of great returning series for 2018-19,” said CW president Mark Pedowitz. “By picking these ten series up for next season, we have a terrific selection of programming to choose from when we set our fall schedule in May, with more still to come.” In the case of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, however, season 4 will be its last. “Just turned on my wifi on our flight to Chicago and found out that #CrazyExGirlfriend has been renewed for a final season,” tweeted star and co-creator Rachel Bloom. CNN correspondent Kyra Phillips is joining ABC News as a correspondent based in Washington, DC. In addition to experience anchoring programs on CNN and HLN, Phillips “led election coverage and interviewed some of the most fascinating people of our time,” said ABC New president James Goldston in a note to staff sharing news of the hire. The truTV Comedy Breakout Initiative, a search for creator-driven comedy formats with distinct points of view, will return to the New York Television Festival. Entrants have a chance at a $25,000 development budget and collaboration with truTV. NYTVF takes place July 14-19. Donald Trump responded on Monday to a Deadspin video gone viral over the weekend of Sinclair broadcasters repeating scripted anti-media talking points (“we’re concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country”). “So funny to watch Fake News Networks, among the most dishonest people I have ever dealt with, criticize Sinclair Broadcasting for being biased. Sinclair is far superior to CNN and even more Fake NBC,” tweeted the president. That morning, during an extended conversation about the video, Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough said of Sinclair, “This Pravda-style propaganda has got to stop.” Speaking of POTUS, Trump came up during Seth Rogen’s appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show yesterday. Asked about Stormy Daniels, who played a stripper in Knocked Up, Rogen, who starred in the film, said Daniels had mentioned “some of this stuff” about herself and Trump about 10 years ago. “At the time it wasn’t that surprising,” said Rogen. “And as his campaign rolled out it became clear no one really cares about anything he did. So it didn’t really occur to me that it would come out.” As for why Daniels appeared in strip club scenes in two of his movies (also The 40-Year-Old Virgin), Rogen said that while for mainstream actresses playing a stripper could be difficult, for porn star Daniels, it was “perhaps an easy day on set.” ION Media closed the purchase of the full power UHF broadcast TV station in Portland, Maine (WPME-TV) from Ironwood Communications. The station will affiliate with ION Television, effective immediately, as WIPL-TV, in a transaction that will expand the company’s station portfolio to 65 full power stations in 59 of the largest U.S. markets, and add nearly 400,000 new households to ION’s broadcast reach. Last month, Snapchat started allowing publishers to publish branded content on the app, saying it “believes branded content can make for compelling ads users will enjoy.” But just what kind of content will win over digital natives? DIGITAL DATA ESPN+ will be set to stream on April 12, integrated into a new ESPN app and priced at $4.99/month. “ESPN was built on a belief in innovation and the powerful connection between sports and a remarkable array of fans,” said James Pitaro, president of ESPN and co-chair, Disney Media Networks. “That same belief is at the heart of ESPN+ and the new ESPN App.” ESPN’s programming will continue to be available through existing TVE apps. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg fired back at criticism from Apple CEO Tim Cook, who said last week that Apple’s business model, monetizing products to customers rather than monetizing customers, better serves users. In a Vox podcast interview, Zuckerberg said, “I find that argument - that if you’re not paying, that somehow we can’t care about you - to be extremely glib and not at all aligned with the truth. The reality here is that if you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world, then there are a lot of people who can’t afford to pay. And therefore, as with a lot of media, having an advertising-supported model is the only rational model that can support building this service to reach people.” YouTube is introducing shorter ads that allow users to skip after 5 seconds; advertisers only pay if the ads are viewed in full, or if users click on cards that appear on screen. The skippable ads are part of YouTube’s new TrueView for Reach product. BBC America celebrated the fifth anniversary of the launch of Orphan Black on Friday with Twitter giveaways to members of the Orphan Black fan community, #CloneClub. Fans who posted a photo of their #galaxyofwomen had the opportunity to win items like an original MK sheep mask, a Brightborn lab coat, Sarah Manning's London Calling Clash t-shirt or A Vote-for-Alison t-shirt. GOING GLOBAL Krispy Kreme is offering a donut inspired by The Simpsons, called “The D’ohnut.” Pink glazed with sprinkles, the pastry is available until April 30 – but you’ll have to fly to Australia to buy it. |
