IN THE NEWS NBCUniversal gathered its top advertising clients and leaders from different industries for its fourth annual Innovation Day, aimed at exploring disruptive technologies that might be applied to the media business. After Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes welcomed the crowd - noting, “I’m NBC’s answer to Young Sheldon!” - topics ranged from AI, to the evolving shopping experience to the future of storytelling. “We as storytellers need to rethink how we are interacting with customers, and advertisers need to do the same,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg. Measurement also needs rethinking, offered John Swift, CEO of investment at Omnicom Media Group North America. “We need to move past the idea of ‘matching luggage’ for measurement,” said Swift. “The more we try to force TV measurement across platforms, the more we miss platforms’ value.” Then there’s Facebook. “Facebook’s business model is based on capturing data that many times people don’t know they’re giving, and then selling that data, very often electronically, to a buyer where Facebook doesn’t even know the buyer,” said NBCUni CEO Steve Burke. “So there’s a whole series of things going on in their business model that are very different from our business model.” Speaking of, word came from CNN yesterday that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is planning to testify before Congress, in the wake of the revelation that data firm Cambridge Analytica accessed personal data from over 50 million Facebook users without their knowledge. Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has asked Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to testify at a hearing about data privacy on April 10. The NAB Show’s April 10 session, VR Experience and Applications for the Advertising Industry, offers a look at impactful VR experiences from a marketer’s perspective, as well as the latest tools and strategies for maximum engagement. For more, go here: https://nab18.mapyourshow.com/7_0/sessions/session-details.cfm?ScheduleID=427 (Note this session takes place on the Show Floor - Destination NXT Theater in South Upper - and anyone with a badge can attend.) Post-Cambridge Analytica scandal, 8% of people surveyed said they will stop using Facebook over concerns about abuse of personal data. 19% said they would use it “significantly less” and 26% said they would use it “somewhat less.” Securities firm Raymond James shared the results, but added, “We believe these user concerns could ease as the news cycle slows on this topic.” A virtual reality installation that aims to convey the despair and danger faced by immigrants trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border has arrived in Washington, D.C. “Carne y Arena” (“Virtually present, Physically invisible”), from Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, offers a 6-minute immersive experience demonstrating the desperate circumstances of people journeying in the desert. Plans are for the installation, which premiered at Cannes in 2017, to be open 12 hours a day until August. Cinemax renewed Strike Back for season 6. “The rebirth of Strike Back has reestablished Cinemax as a destination for adrenalized, entertaining action series,” said Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming. Season 5 finale airs Friday, April 6 at 10p. |
