Everyone is feeling overwhelmed at the moment. Certainly my current mood can most accurately be described as this: arrrghhhhhhhh!!!!%%%%%%%hfuheaiufhuiaegiueaguieua. Which I might have put in the subject line had I not feared this email would get immediately junked. We are being spammed from all directions at the moment. I can only hope that mercury is in retrograde. The crux of the issue is this: too much to do, too little time. Perhaps, even, too much choice. Even deciding what to watch on Netflix can feel like a mental travail. Fairy school or serial killer or Marilyn Monroe… how is it midnight already? Paris Fashion Week has just started, which means more things, more options, to consider. Will you be a maximalist or a minimalist next season? Short skirts or long? How to tie your sweater? What colours will you be gobbling up? Paris also means that we’re on the home stretch of fashion month. It is revealing of our collective overwhelm, I think, that one of the most coveted and lauded looks of the season was something so simple: Kate Moss in jeans, a white tee and a lumberjack shirt at the Bottega Veneta show in Milan this weekend. In the expert hands of Matthieu Blazy it wasn’t just jeans, and a white tee and a lumberjack shirt; that ‘denim’ and ‘flannel’ was in fact printed leather, AKA a ravishingly luxurious take on the ultimate normcore look. But in its visual simplicity – and on a model who, at 48, doesn’t just come with her own history but her own mythology – it spelled a desire to wipe the slate clean, to start afresh, to distil our options into a crisp decision. A friend of mine who was at the Bottega Veneta show said it made him want to get rid of everything and start again. Starting again? Sounds rather appealing doesn’t it. Laura |
