Hey there!

It's Bob's birthday — so it only feels fitting that this is the day that we make this cool (free) update of CSS Grid Builder available to everyone. Yay!

We'll give you the highlights of this update in a bit, first let's talk about the concept of this app. For years we have been relying on (grid) frameworks like Bootstrap and Foundation. Both recently added a flex-grid to their code base, which we believe to be the wrong approach — flexbox was not made to serve as a page layout system.

Don't get us wrong here — front-end frameworks are still useful, but not for layout. Which is exactly how CSS Grid Builder works: use all the other goodness of the framework of choice, like helpful The Toggle in Foundation, while managing layout with the visual CSS Grid Editor.

With all the code bloat for managing rows and columns* removed, the design is easier to maintain, more modular and future proof — reusing (code) components or switching to a different (front-end) system is way easier. And you can create production proof layouts today, with the help of Feature Queries.

* As Bob will demonstrate in an upcoming article, we're talking about tons of divs and CSS here.

CSS Grid Builder

 Support Feature Queries

Last week Bob showed how Feature Queries could be used to create fallback layouts for browsers that do not support CSS Grid. They work wonders, but the entire workflow is a bit tedious. That's why we plan to add them to CSS Grid Builder!

Can you imagine designing for different browser capabilities with minimal effort? All within one single app? With your help we can make it possible!

You can back Feature Queries for just $29. When it's done you will get the update for free (for everyone else the price will be $129). We think it's a great deal for a great cause — it will certainly make Bob's (birth)day if you do!

So... what's new in this update?

It is a whole list really... We tweaked performance, updated the un/redo system, added  position: sticky  to the positioning controls, updated controls to support the  perspective  property, and much much more...

Personally, we are a big fan of the whole new Custom State workflow. This allows you to target elements in a specific state, like the   :nth-child()  or dynamic classes triggered by Javascripts. This is oh so sweet!

We would love to talk about the app update and CSS Grid more but... Bob is about to head to Nashville for Wordcamp US 2017 where he will be talking about 'designing for dynamic (cms) content using CSS Grid'. And we'll be there cheering him on. Please come say 'hi' if you are in the area, we know he would love to chat grid and more with ya.

Get your copy of the CSS Grid Builder below. Also, just a quick reminder that today is the last day to get the Cyber Monday 35% discount storewide. So if there is anything you have had your eye on, now is the time to pick it up. Just use coupon code CYBER35.

Stay tuned for the next article that explains why CSS Grid is future proof and great for working with 'unknown' content. Until then, have a wonderful day! :)
