| Dear Voornaam, Welcome to Cancer Research UK's monthly newsletter your guide to the latest research news, events and funding schemes from us and our partners. Its been another remarkable year for research, and Id like to take this opportunity to thank you again for all the work you do for Cancer Research UK both the research itself but also helping us with fundraising, policy work and public engagement. It has been a great year for partnership with the launch of our early detection initiative ACED (international Alliance for Cancer Early Detection), a renewal of our Accelerator Award partnership with the cancer foundations of Spain and Italy, and our new joint CRUK-AstraZeneca Functional Genomics Centre (FGC) based in Cambridge. We also have embarked on our consultation for the new round of Grand Challenge. Over the course of 5 months, we held workshops in Madrid, Milan, Edinburgh, London and Amsterdam, and received an array of carefully considered challenge suggestions from the wider researcher community through independent workshops and our online form. Our Grand Challenge Advisory Panel, chaired by Sir Paul Nurse, will review the prospective challenges and well reveal the next round of challenges in February. We end the year with an election, and we have set out the charitys priorities for a new incoming government in the CRUK manifesto, covering what patients and research need from a future government.  MARSHALL SYMPOSIUM EXPLORES TUMOUR DORMANCY AND REAWAKENING Tumour dormancy and reawakening present major challenges for treating cancer and preventing recurrence, but also potential for new approaches to researching and treating cancer. At our 3rd annual symposium in memory of Chris Marshall, 20 world-leading experts came together to examine tumour dormancy and reawakening from all angles, and identify opportunity areas. An author group of the participants have now published an article in Trends in Cancer presenting some of the key ideas from the meeting. |

|  THEA TLSTY: BALANCING SAFETY AND RISK IN RESEARCH The balance between safety and risk in a research career is a delicate one. Thea Tlsty, Principal Investigator for the CRUK Grand Challenge-funded STORMing Cancer team, discusses the right time to take risks and when to err on the side of caution. She reveals how she enables postdocs in her lab to be more daring in their research, while also building a stable foundation for their scientific career. Thea also explores how our Grand Challenge initiative is enabling risk-taking on a global scale, and is facilitating revolutionary rather than incremental change in cancer research. |

| | CRUK BRAIN TUMOUR CONFERENCE: REGISTRATION NOW OPEN After our highly successful meeting in 2018, the Cancer Research UK Brain Tumour Conference returns to London in 2020. The conference aims to generate fresh thinking and stimulate debate in brain tumour research to transform our understanding of this hard-to-treat disease and accelerate impact for patients. Join us for another stellar line-up of international experts from brain tumour research and allied disciplines, and stimulating sessions designed to spark new opportunities for collaborative research.
All attendees are eligible to submit an abstract, and students and postdocs are welcome to submit their work to feature in our Future Leaders session.

| | PAEDIATRIC CANCER RESEARCH FUNDING: DEADLINE APPROACHING The deadline for our Children and Young Peoples Cancer Innovation Award is coming up in just over a month on 10 January 2020. If you plan to apply, please contact the office before 6 December to discuss your proposal and open an online application form. A new initiative, the award was created as part of our new strategy for paediatric cancers, and looks to support novel and innovative approaches in this area. We are particularly interested in applications that include researchers with expertise beyond paediatric cancer research, such as those working in other cancer fields and those in disciplines outside biomedical research, who are interested in using their knowledge and skills to answer key questions in paediatric cancers. |
