WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THE ECMC PAEDIATRIC NETWORK? The Little Princess Trust is now co-funding our network of paediatric Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMCs) in partnership with us, the NIHR, the Chief Scientific Office in Scotland and Health and Social Care Research Wales. The network will receive 6.6m over the next 5 years, almost three times the amount from the last funding period. The network will employ more specialist nurses, researchers and data managers. There's a major project to develop a new data platform that will bring together information about people's cancer and match patients to trials that are most likely to help them. Patient samples will become more accessible, improving immunotherapies in the next generation of trials. Trial design will get more patient-friendly too with the network supporting tests and scans at local hospitals as well as ECMCs. There are also plans to open a new paediatric ECMC location in Cardiff, meaning more early-phase trials will take place in Wales and less travelling for children and young people who need to receive experimental treatments. |

POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR #RESEARCHATRISK CAMPAIGN Cancer Research UK will receive around 3.7m from the Medical Research Charity Early-Career Researcher Fund, which well be able to invest in early career researchers. The fund was set up following a joint charity #ResearchatRisk campaign which called on the UK government to help plug the shortfall in research funding for medical research charities during the Covid-19 pandemic. |

Q&A ON TEENAGE AND YOUNG ADULT CANCER Teenagers and young adults go through many changes in their lives, which has a major impact on cancer presentation, diagnosis, treatment and outcome and the longer-term impact on their lives, says Sandra Strauss, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant at University College London. To mark the first ever Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Awareness month, Sandra and Caroline-May Huxley (Research Manager, Cancer Research UK) talked to us about why cancer in teens and young adults should be considered an area in its own right, the scientific distinctions relevant for this group and how we can make a change so young people can lead longer and better lives. |
