Can shopping data help diagnose cancer earlier? |
| Using big data to uncover early signal of cancer means thinking outside the box – and that’s exactly what researchers Jame Flanagan and Sima Toopchiani from Imperial College London did. The Cancer Loyalty Card Study (CLOCS) collected six years of loyalty card data from two major retailers to track women's purchases before an ovarian cancer diagnosis. The findings revealed that many women bought products like pain and indigestion medication. CLOCS-2 now aims to expand its focus on other cancer types, helping improve early diagnosis and impact patient outcomes.

| | Leadership is a mindset, not a job role. That’s something the group of post-docs taking part in our Bridge to Academic Leadership programme have been discovering. The programme supports postdocs to transition to independent academic positions and in a recent session, they examined their own leadership styles and learned techniques to align their values with running a team. This session also emphasised the importance of continually refreshing your leadership training because as your career progresses, so does your role as a leader. You can take advantage of our leadership coaching opportunities and touch up your skills. | |
| | | | We need to urgently address the declining number of clinical researchers. They’re a vital part of our workforce, driving new and better ways to beat cancer, from discoveries in the lab all the way through to the clinic. We’re working with partners across the medical research sector to implement recommendations to ensure that we continue to deliver world-class clinical research in the UK. This report makes important recommendations on how we can improve the training and career opportunities available to clinical researchers, building a sustainable clinical research workforce for the future. | |

| | The focus this World Cancer Day is on equitable access and high-quality care for all, and we’re highlighting the need to reduce cancer inequalities through research. We spoke to researchers about what will be key to tackling this. A common theme across answers was the need to address limited understanding of the causes of inequalities and the interplay between biological factors with other socio-economic and behavioural factors. You can watch back the video, shot in 2023, of researchers Sigourney Bonner, Kay-Tee Khaw, Kudzai Nyamondo and Ketan Patel responding to this question. | |
| | | | At our brain tumour conference last September, neuro-oncologist Adrienne Boire spoke about her studies on how metastatic cancer cells adapt to inhabit the central nervous system. Hear about some of the mechanisms these cancer cells deploy to outcompete neighbouring cells in extremely challenging microenvironments and how Adrienne’s research has been translated into the clinic for a phase 1 trial. Join the conversation to find out more about future applications of cerebrospinal fluid liquid biopsies and the challenges of working at the intersection of neuroscience and oncology.
