| | At this year’s AACR in San Diego, Jean Abraham and Karen Pinilla from our Cambridge Centre Precision Breast Cancer Institute presented results of PARTNER, a Phase 2-3 trial for patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) or breast cancer caused by an inherited BRCA mutation. Results from the TNBC cohort, published in Nature, showed that adding targeted drug olaparib to platinum-based chemotherapy before surgery did not improve outcomes for patients with TNBC. The study has led to a more optimal chemotherapy regime for these patients, and continued research on the extensive sample and data resource will help us to understand TNBC better in order to identify better treatments. | |

| #CRUKFunded: New insights into the interplay between diet the microbiome and the immune system |
| In a paper recently published in Science, researchers found that vitamin D rich diets could improve cancer immunity. The study, headed up by Evangelos Giampazolias, Group Leader of the Cancer Immunosurveillance Group at Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute and Caetano Reis e Sousa, senior Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute, gave mice diets rich in vitamin D. They found the vitamin D acted on epithelial cells in the intestine, promoting growth and improving the metabolic qualities of the bacteria Bacteroides fragilis, which in turn boosts T-cell responses to cancer. How B.fragilis acts to improve tumour immunity remains unknown, but the study findings point towards MyD88-dependent receptor signalling and type I IFN production as potential key factors. The researchers further investigated this effect in humans by analysing a dataset of 1.5m people in partnership with the Aalborg University in Denmark, which highlighted a link between lower vitamin D levels and a higher risk of cancer. A separate analysis also found a positive link between cancer patients with higher levels of vitamin D and response to immunotherapy. |

On our way to a smokefree UK |
| MPs in Westminster voted last month to take us one step closer to enacting historic legislation to raise the age of sale of tobacco. This is a huge step forward for our Smokefree UK campaign. Thank you to everyone who helped us get here by contributing to the public consultation back in November. We’re now looking to see this legislation move swiftly through the UK Parliament and be implemented across all four UK nations. |
