The first HPV vaccination was introduced in 2006. More than a decade later, a long-awaited study published in The Lancet showed a dramatic reduction in cervical cancer rates among HPV vaccinated women, proving the effectiveness of a health service to eliminate one of the most common causes of death of women worldwide.
Yesterday at the Early Detection of Cancer conference, we proudly unveiled the winner of the Don Listwin Award, Peter Sasieni, the lead author of that study and Director of the Cancer Research UK Prevention Trials Unit at Queen Mary University of London.
Fresh from his award presentation, we spoke to Peter on the story behind HPV vaccination, the opportunities and challenges for cancer prevention research and the promise of multi-cancer early detection tests.
I was also delighted to greet all the great minds presenting at the conference, each making exemplary contributions to the cancer early detection fields and inspiring us all. Together with Canary Center at Stanford and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, were accelerating research so that cancers can be diagnosed and treated at the earliest stage.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR BLACK LEADERS IN CANCER PHD PROGRAMME Our Black Leaders in Cancer PhD scholarship programme is now live for the 2023 application cycle.
This programme, run in partnership with Black in Cancer and the Windsor Fellowship offers four students from Black heritage backgrounds the opportunity of a four-year fully funded PhD at either our City of London or our Cambridge centre. Theyll also have access to support and mentorship throughout their placement.
