Dear Voornaam,

Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email.

To round off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re pleased to announce the launch of VIVO Biobank, our new partnership with Blood Cancer UK, creating the largest national resource of biological samples and data from cancers affecting children and young people.

While the incidence of these cancers is low, it can mean researchers face limited access to samples. This collaboration, and the merging of our two existing biobanks – the CCLG Tissue Bank and CellBank – provides a single point of access to the widest collection of childhood cancer samples and data available.

In our latest feature we spoke to Professor Christina Halsey, paediatric oncologist and Head of the School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow, about how this will open opportunities for collaboration and enable high-quality research to develop new treatments and accelerate progress for patients.

NEW GUIDANCE TO SUPPORT PAEDIATRIC TRIAL COSTING

Paediatric studies can face several challenges during set up that lead to additional delays when compared to adult trials – this is mainly due to extended negotiations in costing trials and identifying excess research costs. This has been heightened by pressures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

To help overcome this, the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC) network and the NCRI Neuroblastoma sub-group have developed consensus standard of care guidance for early-phase studies involving children and young people with relapsed neuroblastoma.

These provide a clear definition of minimum standard of care requirements which should mitigate undue negotiations and subsequent delays to trial set-up.

Setting up early-phase clinical trials efficiently is critical to providing patients with the earliest possible access to novel treatments.
