Dear Voornaam,

This week we’ve shared the news that Lord Simon Stevens will be the next Chair of our Trustees. Simon will take over from Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz who steps down in October after almost 7 years in the role.

Borys joined us in 2016 following a distinguished career in research and academic leadership. Throughout his tenure we’ve benefited hugely from his leadership, most recently overseeing our work during the pandemic, one of the most difficult periods in our history. His passion for cancer research has consistently shone through and we’ve achieved several key research milestones during his time as chair.

Simon Stevens has worked in the health sector for more than 30 years, most recently serving as the chief executive of NHS England. His career has spanned roles in international health care in the public and private sectors, at the Department of Health and in 10 Downing Street. Simon became an independent crossbench member of the House of Lords in 2021 and will remain so when he joins Cancer Research UK. He was appointed following an open external recruitment process over several months.

I would like to add my personal thanks for the support and encouragement Borys has given our team at Cancer Research UK. We look forward to welcoming Simon in October and working with him to implement our exciting new strategy.

Kind regards,
Iain Foulkes

NEW IN CANCER DISCOVERY: THE DIVERSE EVOLUTIONARY LANDSCAPE OF ADVANCED MELANOMA

Lavinia Spain et al present an in-depth analysis of 14 immune checkpoint inhibitor-treated patients as part of the PEACE research autopsy programme.

They observed frequent whole-genome doubling and widespread loss of heterozygosity, often involving antigen presentation machinery. Single-cell sequencing revealed polyclonal seeding of metastases originating from clones with different ploidy in one of the patients. And they observed that brain metastases that diverged early in molecular evolution emerge late in disease.

THE DEVELOPMENTAL ORIGINS OF CANCERS IN CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

Are you working in children’s and young people’s cancer, developmental biology, neurology, immunology or could translate your research to this field?

Join Katrin Ottersbach (University of Edinburgh), Peter Dirks (Hospital for Sick Kids), Harry Leitch (MRC London Institute of Medicine Sciences) and Josef Vormoor (Prinses Maxima Centrum) on 26 April, 4pm BST, to delve into the latest research developments.

Reserve your spot for our webinar and find out how a better understanding of the developmental origins could improve cancer prevention, detection and find novel and less toxic treatments.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR CAMPAIGN

In just over four weeks, our One Cancer Voice petition calling on Rishi Sunak to address the cancer emergency in England was signed by more than 76 thousand people. On 22 March we delivered the petition to 10 Downing Street, voicing our demands.

Thank you to all those who signed and shared our petition – this was truly a collaborative effort and a nation-wide statement for the future of cancer care.

PROMISING PROGRESS FOR ALLOSTERIC MODULATOR

iOnctura, one of Cancer Research Horizons’ spinouts, has published the latest non-clinical research into its drug roginolisib, a first-in-class, non-ATP-competitive, allosteric modulator of PI3Kδ.

The paper, published in Cancer Research Communications, highlights that roginolisib safely inhibits regulatory T cell proliferation, showing great potential for the ongoing clinical trials.

iOnctura has received orphan drug designation for roginolisib in rare eye cancer uveal melanoma.

HACKING CANCER CELL METABOLISM

Back in 2012, Oliver Maddocks and Karen Vousden discovered that selective amino acid depletion can slow tumour growth in mice.

Working closely with two other research groups with similar findings around metabolism and diet, these discoveries laid the groundwork for Oliver to co-found Faeth Therapeutics, a startup trialling the role of precision diet and support in cancer treatment.

Oliver talks us through his journey from discovery researcher to chief scientific officer and the next steps for Faeth’s discovery platform.
