| | Congratulations to our Data for Children’s and Young People’s Cancer Pilot Award recipients Emma Woodward, Simon Bomken, Maria Hawkins, Benjamin Hall, Anthony Moorman, Katie Harron, Anindita Roy and Martin McCabe. The awards for Anthony and Katie are jointly funded with Children with Cancer UK; Anindita and Martin’s awards are co-funded with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity. These pilot awards support data-driven research questions to develop new, scalable and generalisable solutions to common challenges in children’s and young people’s cancers. They build on our Research Data Strategy and support our strategy of putting discovery at the heart of the research that we support. |

Why is there a £1bn research funding gap? |
| The UK could be facing a more than £1bn funding gap into cancer research over the next decade, if funding does not keep pace with inflation and increases in cancer cases. Ahead of the general election in summer, we’re calling on all party leaders to set out a plan to ensure that vital research into cancer gets the funding it needs. Speaking on our podcast series, That Cancer Conversation, director of policy Owen Jackson unpacks why we have this funding gap and what we need to do about it. Listen to the podcast and sign our open letter to back research. |

| | | | Don’t miss the opportunity to present your findings on cancer early detection to a global audience. If you work on how biology can inform early detection, emerging technologies, early detection trials or artificial intelligence submit your abstract to be considered for a lightning talk or poster exhibition. The conference is hosted by the Canary Center at Stanford in collaboration with OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and us during 22-24 October in San Francisco. | |

| | A well-written narrative can help clarify a researcher’s journey and skillset, but we will ensure that our reviewers look for evidence of achievements.” |
| In the latest addition to our research careers column, our Funding Policy and Governance Manager Mathew Tata took us through how our grant applicants and expert reviewers think of narrative CVs. Read more about the benefits and concerns of narrative CVs, along with the steps ahead to make the narrative the main tool for communicating an applicant’s achievements.
