Dear Voornaam, Welcome to your weekly Cancer Research UK Research Update email. I’m pleased to share news about our new research data strategy with you today. Data science is key to answering many of the important questions in discovery, prevention, detection and treatment research, and achieving the objectives we set out in our research strategy. Our new strategy sets out how we will scale up our activity and ensure we are grasping the ever-growing opportunities to use data science wisely and fairly to generate maximum insight from research data and samples. We’re already supporting research in data science, and over the coming months we are developing exemplar research programmes, with dedicated funding for data science projects to follow. We will also launch a state-of-the-art, interoperable Trusted Research Environment so that innovative high-priority research collaborations involving cancer data can be done in a safe, secure and reliable environment. We’ve worked closely with people affected by cancer throughout to ensure that we are always acting in the very best interests of people who will benefit from this work and can advocate for the secure and responsible use of patient and public data to strengthen the UK’s R&D environment for data science. Thank you to everyone who provided their insights to help us develop this strategy. Your support is vital to achieving our goals as we work together to build a stronger cancer data science community. Also in this email, and amidst all the political upheaval of the last few days, our policy team analyses the latest government clinical research implementation plan and asks, can it succeed? Kind regards, Iain Iain Foulkes Executive Director Research & Innovation CEO Cancer Research Horizons Cancer Research UK

| “We intend to solve the challenges and realise the patient benefits of secure data-sharing" Big data is becoming a vital tool to beat cancer. However, our ability to generate cancer-relevant data has outpaced our capability to effectively use it. To capitalise on the full value of data will need a joined-up approach... |

GOING BEYOND RECOVERY Is the UK government’s vision for clinical research on track? Joe Kiely from our policy team looks at the latest implementation plan for clinical research to see what the government has planned for some of the £5bn allocated to health research in the latest Spending Review. Will it make a difference for the recovery of clinical research impacted by COVID-19? |
