Dear Voornaam,

This week we’ve published Longer, Better Lives, our manifesto for cancer research and care which sets out proposals to strengthen the UK’s position as a world-leading destination for discoveries in life sciences, cancer and innovation.

By many measures, we are in a golden age for cancer research with significant discoveries being made every week and novel therapeutic approaches coming online. But we can go further and faster – the research environment is under huge strain, and we are losing talented scientists to other sectors. All this at a time when cancer is the defining health issue of our time, and the challenge is only growing.

In our Manifesto, we’re calling for sustainable biomedical research funding; an effective clinical trials environment; and incentives for industry to invest in and develop new products in the UK.

We’re calling for an increase in overall investment in UK R&D and for charities, industry and public funding agencies to find a long-term sustainable funding model. Our aim is to avoid the consequences of an estimated £1bn funding gap to maintain cancer research funding at pre-pandemic levels.

Thank you to everyone in our research community who helped shape our position. We’ve listened to your views and we’re seeking to address the common barriers you face in research in the UK.

Cancer is a problem. But in our view, it’s a fixable one.

As we move closer to a general election our policy team will be ramping up efforts to build up the political will and leadership to support greater investment and reform in cancer research and care. I know we can rely on your support as always.

Best wishes,

Iain Foulkes

THE APPRAISAL PODCAST WITH IAIN FOULKES – NEW EPISODE OUT NOW

What is the problem with the way researchers are recognised and rewarded? Is there still a cultural divide between academic research and more commercially based science? And can we change this?

In the latest episode of The Appraisal podcast, Iain Foulkes shares his thoughts on building commercial innovation into reward systems, which is included in the policy recommendations in our Manifesto.

Hear from Iain on how we’re improving the research environment and finding the best way to translate research into patient benefit.

SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE: HOW FAIR DATA PRINCIPLES CAN SAVE THE DAY

When Philip Dunne’s project on colorectal phenotypes faced calamity, FAIR data principles came to the rescue. The discovery of a pre-print article from colorectal cancer organoid expert Chris Tape meant Philip could get access to the data he desperately needed.

Philip and Chris’s story shows the power of FAIR data – that’s findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable data – and how vital it is for speeding up cancer research and getting the most out of every experiment.

FAIR data principles were also discussed during this week’s Maximising the Impact of Data webinar series, thank you to all who joined us for that engaging discussion.

WEBINAR TO ADDRESS INCLUSION IN CLINICAL RESEARCH

Join us for a collaborative research webinar on health inequalities in clinical research trials on 6 December from 11-12am.

This presentation will look at the current clinical trial composition in The Christie Hospital and discuss what’s happening across Greater Manchester to improve participation and inclusivity in clinical trials.

The webinar is organised between Cancer Research UK Manchester, City of London, and Cambridge Centres to promote inclusive research activities.

MEET THE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS FOR OUR PREVENTION RESEARCH CONFERENCE

We are pleased to announce the first keynote speakers confirmed for our international prevention research event:

  • Professor Dipak Panigrathy (Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center) addressing the central role chronic inflammation plays in cancer aetiology and how the resolution through therapeutic agents could lead to novel preventive approaches.

  • Professor Karen Canfell (University of Sydney) covering the challenges and importance of implementation of precision cancer prevention intervention, in the context of the prophylactic HPV vaccines.

  • Dr Michael Snyder (Stanford University) speaking on personalising health maintenance and cancer prevention.

A NEW DRUGGABLE PATHWAY IN SENESCENCE

Domhnall McHugh, Jesús Gil and colleagues have found a new pathway to target senescent cells.

The team carried out RNAi screens and identified coatomer complex I (COPI) vesicle formation as a liability of senescent cells. The inhibition of COPI resulted in Golgi dispersal, dysfunctional autophagy and unfolded protein response-dependent apoptosis of senescent cells.

They also found that N-Myristoyltransferase inhibitors (NMTi) selectively eliminated senescent cells and improved outcomes in models of cancer and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

The findings published in the Nature Cell Biology open the potential to treat various senescence-associated diseases including cancer.
