Your August Research Update

Dear Voornaam,

Welcome to your October newsletter.

Throughout the summer weve been asking for your ideas to help shape the next round of Grand Challenge. We held our second challenge-setting workshop in Milan last month with our partners Fondazione AIRC per la Ricerca sul Cancro, and later this month well be in Edinburgh and London to discuss the biggest challenges in cancer research, from evolution and metastasis, to novel therapeutic approaches. Find out more about how you can get involved in shaping our next round of challenges below.

Our early detection team is just back from a hugely successful conference in Stanford, where it was great to be part of a growing community of nearly 400 scientists and clinicians sharing their work and discussing new avenues for research in early detection.

And finally, Id like to make you aware that the Cancer Research UK-MedImmune Alliance Laboratory is now known as the Cancer Research UK-AstraZeneca Antibody Alliance Laboratory. This laboratory provides access to world-class antibody engineering technology and cancer biology expertise. The change comes due to the retirement of the Medimmune brand as part of their acquisition by AstraZeneca, however the lab retains all Medimmune-associated expertise.

Kind regards,

Iain Foulkes

Executive Director, Research & Innovation

LEARN ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS TO ACCELERATE YOUR CAREER

We are pleased to announce two new partnerships with Deep Science Ventures (DSV) and Panacea to support PhD students, postdocs and junior group leaders to become entrepreneurs.

Researchers can apply to either programme and, if selected, be part of an oncology-focused cohort to learn how to transform innovative ideas into viable companies that can one day benefit patients.

You can find out more about the opportunities and meet DSV and Panacea at the upcoming Innovation Summit and at university roadshows.

SUPPORTING YOUR RESEARCH CAREER

SUPPORTING YOUR RESEARCH CAREER

This September, we signed the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. This agreement between funders and employers aims to improve employment conditions and support for researchers in the UK.

The Concordat seeks to drive systematic change and create the healthy and supportive culture needed to ensure our researchers are given every opportunity to thrive. We are committed to realising this change through our funding requirements and polices and continuing to work with fellow signatories to support researchers well-being and development.

FUNDING OPPORTUNTIY IN PREVENTION RESEARCH

The UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) has launched its 2nd funding call for proposals for new Consortium and Network awards.

The UKPRP supports research into the primary prevention of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, and awarded 25m to 8 projects in its first funding round.

Proposals should focus on solutions, policies and strategies which are sustainable, replicable, feasible and affordable and which aim to enable change within complex adaptive systems.
