| | We’re extending our Black Leaders in Cancer PhD scholarship programme for the 2025 intake, to offer more students from Black heritage backgrounds the opportunity to study for a PhD in more locations across the UK. Students apply to any Cancer Research UK centre for a four-year fully-funded PhD which comes with wraparound support and mentorship throughout their placement. It’s delivered in collaboration with our expert partners Black in Cancer and the Windsor Fellowship. Do you know someone who might be interested? Please share the news and encourage them to attend an insight session on 2 or 8 October. |

| Clinical funding scheme now open |
| Our new clinical research funding scheme is now open. It has replaced all existing funding schemes under the Clinical Research Committee with a more flexible and scalable modular-based funding scheme. We invite bold, innovative applications to address important clinical questions and further our understanding of cancer biology and treatment. The flexibility of this scheme allows you to ask for what you need to do the research you wish to do. To apply, complete an expression of interest form and contact the clinical research funding team to discuss your proposal and any questions. |

| Breaking down barriers for paediatric cancer care |
| To mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we had the privilege of sitting down with Sadhana Jackson, a paediatric neuro-oncologist and researcher at the National Institutes of Health. Sadhana’s work focuses on the blood-brain barrier and its implications for drug delivery. In our recent Cancer News for Researchers article, we discuss her career and research interests, her journey from a curious young scientist to a leading researcher in paediatric oncology and the future of cancer treatment for children. |

| | | | We’re pleased to announce the return of the Clinical Research Delivery Conference, set to take place in York on 26 February 2025. Building on the success of our 2023 sold-out event, this one-day conference is focused on the challenges and opportunities for cancer clinical research. It will feature sessions on the role of AI in clinical research, the use of data software, gender diversity, the changing workforce, the future of clinical trials and more. We welcome clinical research nurses, practitioners and other research delivery staff to join us to explore the changing nature of clinical research and celebrate all those involved in delivering clinical trials. Follow along on our social with #CRUKClinical25 for programme updates and news. | |

| Keeping track of CRISPR data |
| The team at the Functional Genomics Centre, a joint facility between our innovation arm Cancer Research Horizons and AztraZeneca, runs pooled CRISPR screens to help our researchers identify genes important to cancer development and drug resistance. But how do they analyse, interpret and understand the vast amounts of information generated every day? They’ve been busy building a database of this genetic treasure trove. Read more to find out how the database works, what they’ve learnt so far and what impact they envision it having on the research field. |
