| | Congratulations to the two Stand Up To Cancer – Cancer Research UK Paediatric Cancer New Discoveries Challenge research teams awarded renewed funding. Each team received a further $5m over three years to continue their work. Martin McCabe (University of Manchester) and Thomas Merchant (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital) will build on initial work in the BRAINatomy study, analysing regions of the brain where radiotherapy causes damage and finding ways to mitigate this. Specifically, they'll investigate reducing doses to sensitive brain areas in patients where it's safe to do so and testing hormones. John Anderson (University College London/Great Ormond Street Hospital), Louis Chesler (The Institute of Cancer Research) and Paul Sondel (University of Wisconsin-Madison) identified that combining CAR-T cells and immune-modulating drugs to modulate CAR-T activity and prevent T cell exhaustion was a promising approach for targeting neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma in preclinical models. They will now develop and conduct a neuroblastoma clinical trial to examine this combination treatment.

| Can decentralised trials become the new normal for cancer? |
| Known as ‘remote’, ‘digital’ or ‘virtual’ trials, decentralised clinical trials (DCTs) are gaining traction within the clinical research sector due to their potential to promote efficient, patient-centric and technologically enabled delivery of clinical trials. Our Clinical Trial Fellow, Yemi Akala, talks us through the benefits and challenges of moving forward with DCTs by placing patients at its heart. Read along to find out where the opportunities lie for cancer trials. |

The 2024 DSIT Research and Innovation Workforce Survey is now live |
| Your perspective is crucial in helping the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology identify trends, challenges and opportunities from the Research and Innovation (R&I) workforce. This survey will take 15-20 minutes to complete. Your input can directly impact UK government policy and Research and Development (R&D) funding decisions. This is the second wave of this survey, with the first survey conducted in 2022 supporting R&I policy work including research talent policy, research culture and equality, diversity and inclusion. This survey spans the full spectrum of R&I careers including but not limited to all researchers, technicians, engineers, R&I leaders, PhD students and R&D managers. |
