There are plenty of Thanksgiving traditions that we know and love like catching a football game, lacing up your sneakers for the local turkey trot, or tuning into "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving". When speaking about holiday routines, we can't forget about parades. One of the country's biggest Thanksgiving parades is set to kick off Thursday morning in Motor City. Now in its 98th year, America's Thanksgiving Parade takes place along Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit. If you want to get some exercise in while supporting a cause this week, the 32nd annual Turkey Trot 5K returns to downtown Grand Rapids on Thanksgiving Day. This year’s 5K has already raised over $100,000 to support K-12 athletics at Grand Rapids Public Schools, hitting its fundraising goal ahead of schedule. |

Cruise ships to bring $230M in economic impact to Great Lakes region in 2025 |
On the water: The cruise ship industry is expected to have a $230 million economic impact on the Great Lakes region in 2025, according to a forecast by Cruise the Great Lakes marketing program. About 22,000 passengers are expected to cruise the Great Lakes in 2025 on ships from Pearl Seas, Viking, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd and Victory. Between the six cruise lines, a total of 700 port visits are expected next year, which is a 30% increase over 2024. On the road: A new transit option is available for residents looking to travel between Detroit, Flint, Saginaw and Mount Pleasant. The intercity bus service FlixBus launched a new route Friday, Nov. 22, linking Detroit to Mount Pleasant. The route also includes stops in Bay City and Midland. In the air: The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 18.3 million people at U.S. airports this week due to extra holiday travelers. Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be the next-busiest air travel days of Thanksgiving week. |

What’s that sprouting in Michigan forests? Not a baby fern but an ancient ally |
With 48,000 acres of wilderness there’s not shortage of plant discoveries in Tahquamenon Falls State Park in the Upper Peninsula. You may have even stumbled across across an ancient plant that evolved some 410 million years ago and are ever present today. Appearing as baby ferns, clubmoss has the appearance of a tree but it’s actually an ancient “fern ally.” Despite its name clubmoss is also not in the moss family, it’s a lycophyte. Questioning utility economics: Indiana Michigan Power wants to charge customers for pricey electricity from some of the nation’s oldest coal-fired power plants, run by a separate firm whose largest shareholder happens to be the utility’s parent company. In the water: Fishery managers are declaring success in an almost 70-year effort to rehabilitate populations of a native apex predator that was almost extirpated from the largest Great Lake. Lake trout, a keystone predator in the Great Lakes, is “fully restored” in Lake Superior according to a binational Great Lakes Fishery Commission announcement last week. |

Plans revealed for future of Michigan’s tallest building, the GM Ren Cen |
Plans revealed: After 28-years, General Motors plans to relocate its headquarters to the Hudson Site, which is Michigan’s second tallest building with construction nearly complete. Bedrock Detroit's conceptual plans reimagine the site along the Detroit Riverfront to include an area with an entertainment district, public spaces and riverfront amenities. The site would go down to three towers. Health care: One of Michigan’s largest health care systems is getting bigger. McLaren Health Care announced Monday, Nov. 25, it has acquired 10 Park Medical Centers clinics throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed publicly. In housing: A new affordable housing community in Ann Arbor is accepting applications from residents interested in being the first to live at The Grove at Veridian. Applicants meeting the income requirements will be selected via lottery, according to Avalon Housing. |

Dan Campbell not sounding confident about status of 3 veterans for Thanksgiving |
Right around the corner: The Lions are getting ready to host the Chicago Bears in their annual Thanksgiving classic game from Ford Field after the team just defeated the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. That quick turnaround has left Dan Campbell sounding concerned about the status of left tackle Taylor Decker, cornerback Carlton Davis III, and wide receiver and former All-Pro punt returner Kalif Raymond, who all have injuries. On the court: Freshman guard Jase Richardson came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points as the Spartans rolled to a 72-56 win against Colorado on Monday in the opening around of the Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center. The Spartans will play their second of three games in three days on Tuesday (6 p.m., ESPN) in a semifinal against Memphis. Catch a game: Calling all hockey fans. The Grand Rapids Griffins are once again partnering with the Grand Rapids Public Library to offer free tickets to select games this season. |

Drone show to light up skyline during Up North Christmas celebration |
The magic of Christmas will come alive at this Up North tree lighting celebration and drone holiday light show. Cadillac’s Christmas in the Park is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Cadillac Commons. The event includes the community Christmas tree lighting, caroling, hot chocolate, food from Primos BBQ, and meet-and-greets with Santa and Mrs. Claus. For the second year in a row, there will be an LED light drone show. The Muskegon Museum of Art will offer a nostalgic holiday collection this month that will take you down memory lane.The Festival of Trees will display everything from vintage ornaments and trains to holiday Barbies and a forest of bottlebrush trees. The festival kicks off Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, Nov. 27 and ends Jan. 5, 2025. After the holidays: After a year of renovations and upgrades, one of the thumb’s popular shoreline campgrounds will be back online for reservations in the new year. Sitting at the tip of the thumb along Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay is Port Crescent State Park. The campsite is set to reopen end of June 2025. The campground is currently undergoing a layout adjustment before going live for reservations in January. |
