Have you heard? There’s a new name for something we all feel at times Have you ever been so annoyed by a sound that you almost snapped? It happens to the best of us, and the issue is so common that scientists are actually trying to figure out why this happens. Whether it’s caused by gum chewing, hiccuping or constant tapping on a desk, psychiatrist Damiaan Denys and his colleagues have finally come up with a name for that violent feeling we get when annoying sounds won’t stop: Misophonia. It comes from the Greek “miso,” meaning “hatred,” and “phonia,” meaning sound. For his label and other research into Misophonia, Denys won the coveted “Ig Nobel Prize,” a satire award for weird, off-beat scientific discoveries. Other contestants this year included a paper on why insect scientists are still scared of spiders and a study on whether poop can be frozen and used as a weapon. Fierce competition, indeed.
