There is no doubt that the pandemic has a lot to answer for.

There is the effect of bereavement for those who have lost loved ones; the impact of a series of lockdowns on our physical health and the hidden harm to our mental health, some of which we may not even realise for years to come.

So in some ways it seems quite churlish to complain about an election pledge to allow local residents free entry to paid-for attractions, which was made in the run-up to the local council elections in May 2019.

A lot has happened since then and the world - not just Blackpool - has changed forever.

You could take the stance that the onset of a global pandemic means that all bets (and pledges) are off. The status quo of May 2019 simply no longer exists. And given that most of our attractions have been closed for the best part of 12 months, it would be asking a lot for them to allow free admission.

What is interesting is the claim that free admission will be on the table once the resort is back on its feet. There’s a long way to go before then.
