TODAY'S TOP STORY Block porn on X The social network X (I still think of it as Twitter) has always had its seedier corners, but now Elon Musk has officially said porn is OK on the platform. And to keep your, uh, activity private, theyβre now hiding likes, too. Coincidence? Yeah, I donβt think so. Running into X-rated images is not going to be OK with millions of X users. If your kid is on X, you should walk them through these steps. If you donβt want to see β¦ well, whatever people start posting, pop into your settings, too. Itβs easiest to do on your computer. To turn off the NSFW stuff on the web: Click More > Settings and privacy. Choose Privacy and safety > Content you see. Uncheck the box for Display media that may contain sensitive content. Click Search settings and check Hide sensitive content. You can get specific, too On the Privacy and safety menu, there's also a Mute and block option. Use this to hide certain words, hashtags and accounts you don't want popping up on your timeline (or your kids' timelines). Choose Muted words. Click the + (plus) button at the top right, and enter what you want to block β like #nsfw. Make sure From anyone and Until you unmute the word are selected. Click Save. Pro tip: NSFW means βnot safe for work.β Yeah, use your imagination, and youβll know what kind of pics that means. A word of warning If you're setting up these filters for your children rather than yourself, they can turn them right back off again. Donβt sneak in and do it β have a frank chat about why these settings should be adjusted. A good conversation can do wonders. If all else fails, though, there are stricter options. On Apple phones and laptops, use the Screen Time feature to put limits on content and apps. Go to Settings > Screen Time on an iPhone or System Settings > Screen Time on a Mac. On Android, install Google Family Link, and on Windows, try Microsoft Family Safety. There are a ton of third-party parental-control apps to choose from if you don't want to rely on the tools from Apple, Google and Microsoft. They'll let you block X altogether or block unsuitable content from showing up. π Use the one-click icons below to share this important update with your family and friends. I bet youβll get a big thank you. |

WEB WATERCOOLER βοΈ Theyβre spying on you: Travel apps including Airbnb and Booking.com are harvesting your data. Flight and hotel booking app Travelstart, for instance, can access your camera to take pics and videos. MakeMyTrip has 50 million downloads β¦ and it can read your text messages. Check out the full list of snoopy apps. It just never stops. π¨ Security breach: A hacker infiltrated tracking company Tile, stealing customersβ names, physical addresses, emails and phone numbers. The bad guys even got into tools that process location data for law enforcement agencies. Instead of paying the hacker off, Tile disabled the login credentials. Nice one for YouTubers: The new Thumbnail Test & Compare lets YouTube creators publish a new video (or update an existing one) and show three thumbnails evenly across viewers. Youβll get back data about which one drew the most watch time and engagement. Fun fact: Mr. Beast spends up to $10,000 per thumbnail to get them just right. Donβt park your Kia in the garage: A North Carolina driver barely escaped her Kia after she heard a loud pop, then it burst into flames. The car was among 1.7 million recalled last September. The antilock brake system can leak fluid and cause electrical shorts. Some nine months later, repair parts are still MIA. Use your inside voice: SoftBank Corp. had a big problem, with its customer service employees stressed out from getting yelled at. So, the company created AI that turns angry voices into calm ones. The software lowers the pitch of customersβ voices and slows down angry rambling. The actual words stay the same. Genius. π CVS recall: Over the past decade, CVS has pulled 133 over-the-counter meds of its own in-store brand off the shelves. From bacteria infestations to moldy factory vents and even incorrect dosing, the recall reasons vary. The top offenders are eye drops, cough medicines and constipation treatments. Check your house for any. πΆ Anything is paw-sible: A puppy got a second chance at life thanks to 3D-printed screws. His owner noticed something wrong when the little guy yelped and collapsed. His spine wasnβt connected properly, causing him to lose limb function. Three months post-surgery, heβs back on his feet. A 3D-printed spine β imagine that! π Are you still using QuickBooks? TECH LIFE UPGRADES Who the heck is that? Thereβs a spiffy new feature coming to the Google Phone app in the next update. Tap on a number in your "Recents" list, and youβll see a Lookup option. It opens up a search for that number so you can see who it is. Yup, reverse lookup right on your phone. Nice. Mac video upgrade: When youβre in a vid meeting, click the camera icon in the top right corner of the toolbar. Select Studio Light, and click the arrow to make your face bright and your background darker. The downside? It only works on newer Macs with an Apple chip. π Quick search: Hit the Windows logo key + S. Youβll get search results across your files and the web. On a Mac, Cmd (β) + spacebar is your search shortcut. Because youβre not going to read it: Terms of Service; Didnβt Read is both a website and a browser add-on that summarizes the key points before you hit βAgree.β π Never lost in conversation: You donβt need to know the exact name of something anymore to find it in Google Maps. Search for general terms, like βplants and trees,β βframe shopβ or βdog park,β and Google will find you spots that match. An expensive Ring to it: Ringβs raised its Basic video doorbell subscription cost from $3.99 to $4.99 a month. Always something, huh? More than ever, getting SimpliSafe* to protect your whole home is a smarter and cheaper choice. |
BY THE NUMBERS 500 catalytic converters Are stolen every month in Los Angeles County. It was 900 per month a few years ago. Police there are curbing thefts by etching VINs onto catalytic converters, making them easier to track. Give your local police a ring to see if they offer something like this. If not, ask them, "Why not?" I had the converter stolen out of my truck. What a pain. 16% decrease In cancellations when streaming services offer bundles. Itβs easier to convince yourself to keep the subscription if youβre still watching one or two out of three services. The new kid on the block is Comcastβs StreamSaver trio (Peacock, Netflix and Apple TV+) for $15 a month. $175 per pair For fake eyelashes put on by a Luum robot. Human lash artists do the prep, then two robots put on the glue and lashes. Iβm not putting any bot near my eyes. My trick for thick lashes: Put on one coat of mascara, then take a little foundation powder on your fingers and put on your lashes. Do one final coat of mascara. Gorg! π
