Room service: Housebound gamers check in to an old favoriteIn the days before Facebook, online social spaces were quite diverse. Not only did MySpace (a hybrid social-music platform) exist, but teens and tweens had access to thousands of games and virtual hangouts to pass the time. The social media boom of the early 2010s killed off many of these websites, but quarantined gamers are making a pilgrimage back to some of their old haunts to recapture that spirit of fun. One of the best examples is Habbo Hotel, an old online game where users created custom hotel rooms and throw parties for their virtual avatars. Over the past few weeks, the amount of new users has skyrocketed, and the once-empty website is full of guests spamming each other with emoji and jokes. Some college seniors are even throwing virtual graduation parties to cope with the loss of their year-end festivities. Whether or not these guests stick around after COVID-19 is unknown, but for now, there’s still time to “book a room.” Ever wonder how video games get made in the first place?
