Good Evening Will you be heading out to one of our beaches or national parks this weekend? The Government has given us carte blanche to do so, as long as we stick to the social distancing guidelines drawn up to protect us all. While on the face of it, a bracing walk along the beach or a hike up a Lake District fell may appear to be just the ticket for those of us who have been in lockdown for weeks, it is worth just taking a moment to consider the consequences. Because if all of us decided to go for a walk up Coniston Old Man or wander along Blackpool Prom between the piers, where would that leave us? Looking for spaces in crowded car parks, jostling at the ticket machines and then struggling to keep 2m away from the rest of the strollers and hikers who all had the same idea. The Government has caused a potential issue by not putting any kind of restriction on how far we travel, leaving it to common sense. If only we could rely on every member of the public to have common sense the people who live in scenic areas who are concerned about the spread of the virus would have nothing to worry about. In the meantime, I hope you and your families stay safe. Gillian Parkinson Editor |
