PICKS OF THE WEEK Amba Amba at 1430 W 28th St. in Cleveland's Hingetown neighborhood is a dinner destination to try when you need to spice up your life. We're not just trying to be punny. The India-inspired menu created by noted Cleveland chef Doug Katz, is dominated with toasted spices that are completely foreign to the average American diner. It delivers a sensory challenge that will take you outside your comfort zone -- and outside the country. Every small plate differs from the last in taste, but not in delight. Two of our favorite dishes are the shared appetizer plate of Crispy Puris and the frozen dessert known as Kulfi. Crispy Puris are crispy little shells filled with an exotic potato salad, zhug, yogurt, tamarind and green onion ($13). Klufi is like a non-dairy creamsicle made with saffron, pistachio, mango and coated with candied turmeric ($9) DETAILS Eugene Kitchen Eugene Kitchen, 13368 Madison Ave., Lakewood and 2050 Lee Rd., Cleveland Heights, makes the best burger in Cleveland if you’re willing to seek it out. The pop-up kitchen has a permanent home at BottleHouse Brewery’s Lakewood and Cleveland Heights locations. The Tinman Burger is the star of the show — it’s a half-pound smash burger topped with American cheese, special sauce, and pickles — but it’s only the start of the menu. Eugene makes some of the crispiest chicken tenders ever with hot honey drizzle, with a list of homemade sauces for dipping. The fries, mac and cheese, and other specials add the cherry on top of Eugene’s classic American menu. DETAILS Barrelhouse focuses on small plates, drinks Barrelhouse is one of Akron’s newest restaurants and offers shared plates, salads (like this Ceasar with giant parmesan crust) and design-your-own-burgers. It also has an excellent draft list, with everything from local holiday spiced ales to out-of-region beers from breweries like Three Floyds. It’s in the former Arnie’s space at 1682 W. Market St., in the city’s Wallhaven neighborhood. READ MORE |
