Salamander bushfire: A bushfire in Salamander Bay came close to the region's library on Tuesday. Local firefighters brought it under control and there was no damage to properties. Varroa mite under control: The Department of Primary Industries is confident it has contained the varroa mite outbreak that hit Newcastle before expanding elsewhere in the state. More than 100 days since the deadly parasite was first detected in the Port of Newcastle, 98 per cent of hives in eradication zones across New South Wales have been destroyed. National Parks expand: The New South Wales National Park estate has expanded in the Hunter region, in a bid to protect habitat for threatened and endangered species. In the Hunter region, more than 1,200 hectares of land across the Warrawolong, Tangory and Tiraki Nature Reserves have been added. GP wait times rise: Hunter General Practitioners Association chairman Dr John Goswell says the old model of general practice care, where one patient is seen after another, is failing. There are reports of a six to eight week wait for some GPs in Maitland, an issue which NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard recently raised in budget estimates. Microgrid trial: Ausgrid is testing a microgrid to try and offer a solution to an Upper Hunter town prone to power outages. A small network of power generation and storage will operate in Merriwa during planned and unplanned power interruptions. Freight worker shortage: A Hunter freight company says more workers are needed in the industry. Leonie Carter from Carter Heavy Haulage and Transport was among the operators who met with Transport for New South Wales in Singleton this week. World-class oncology: The Hunter now boasts a specialised radiation oncology centre at the University of Newcastle.
