Monkey business: German monkey paw mystery deepensAs COVID-19 research accelerates around the world, many countries have already moved into the animal-testing phase of vaccines and treatments. Before these products can be approved for human use, many researchers first test them on monkeys to make sure they’re safe. But residents in the German state of Bavaria have suspected the tests have taken a darker turn after a cleanly severed monkey hand was found by a forrester and his dog. Locals suspected at least one escaped test subject had gotten loose in a forest, but further investigation has only made the situation even stranger. After analyzing the hand, researchers found that it was much older than it initially appeared, and looks to have been preserved in formaldehyde at some point. Does this mean a mad German scientist was traveling through the forest with preserved monkey paws? Was he making spooky, ironic wishes with them? Whatever the case, we’re glad the investigators lent a hand. Fiction aside, monkeys actually love magic in real life, too! Tap or click here to see a monkey’s reaction to a magic trick. → |
