A new research report has found that many Australians believe the plans being offered by the National Broadband Network are not worth paying extra money for. Households connected to the NBN are paying an average of 10% more for their service, compared to those with either ADSL or cable broadband. As if to underline the point, telco voice solutions specialist MyNetFone has called for the NBN to level the playing field for mid-size telcos in Australia by changing the wholesale pricing model and reducing the network access points. Still on the NBN, at the recent TechLeaders conference Jason Clare, Shadow Minister for Communications, described the NBN as MTTM (Malcolm Turnbull’s Terrible Mess) and called it ‘CopperArt’ in reference to using copper to deliver the last mile for an at best questionable cost savings. Internet Australia has lambasted the peak body for the promotion of copyright, creative rights and piracy research, Creative Content Australia, for its overly zealous approach to eliminating online piracy. Telstra and Netgear claim a ‘world-first’ Gateway using Broadcom’s 4x4 Wi-Fi AC chipset for multiple simultaneous Wi-Fi connections at speeds up to 2.8Gbps.
