Dispatches From the Financial Front Lines

Dear Reader,

Remember the pandemic? Yeah, I know, we all do, but bear with me a second. Because I want to tell a story about what I discovered during that uneasy time.

In 2020, as coronavirus concerns spread, we started to produce panel discussions in Zoom to help our audience navigate campus lockdowns, emergency remote teaching, and other Covid challenges. What I quickly found out as I moderated and produced these events, is that we learned as much from the attendees as we did from our speakers. That interaction helped guide our coverage. And the opportunity to respond to your questions live and connect you directly with our journalists opened up a new way for TheChronicle to engage its audience.

Virtual Forums Enhance Journalism

In the five years since then, we’ve hosted hundreds of webinars and expanded the variety of ways you can meet us, whether online or in person. This month we launched a Chronicle events page to make sure you know about all the opportunities.

What will you find there?

Virtual Events: We hold almost weekly online forums on the issues that concern higher-ed leaders, faculty, and staff. Recent events have explored how to develop the right institutional policies for AI, what skills employers want from college graduates, and advice on how to support food-insecure students. In addition to our steady stream of forums, in September we hold our marquee event, the Chronicle Festival, a three-day virtual conference that focuses on the big ideas shaping the future of higher ed.

Chronicle On-the-Road Events

Chronicle On-the-Road: Our editors and reporters crisscross the country to talk at major higher-ed conferences. Check out where they will be next – and please say hello if you’re there. We also hold our own in-person events, which are often small, more intimate gatherings to discuss key issues with campus decision makers. These are frequently done in partnership with colleges and companies. For example, recently The Chronicle worked with Rice University to host a lunch event exploring the ways university endowments support students – and why the funds face intense political fire. You can learn more about those partnership opportunities on our events page as well.

Professional-Development Programs: We offer a variety of workshops that draw on The Chronicle’s expertise and the experience of professionals in the field. Upcoming sessions include a semester-long program on leadership transformation, a shorter ‘crash course’ for new and aspiring academic administrators, and a training session for women leaders. Whether you’re building your leadership skills or navigating change at your institution, these programs offer useful tools and real-world perspectives to support your professional growth.

We want these events and opportunities to help our audience. But as important, they allow us to hear from you, to find out what’s on your mind, and learn what we as a resource for independent journalism, career development, and forward-looking intelligence can do to better support you. I hope you will take the time to check out our full events lineup.

Sincerely,
