Publishers have many reasons to be excited about on-demand audio, but monetization is probably not one of them at this point. With Amazon's Alexa, they're starting to figure out what does and doesn't work. Barstool Sports is venturing into sports documentaries -- with a twist. The 10-minute videos cover topics the traditional sports media giants largely ignore, like Manti Te'o's nonexistent dead girlfriend. Ahead of Germany's national election in September, publisher Axel Springer is trying to engage first-time voters. Here's a look at the experiment its in-house journalism school conducted through WhatsApp that targeted this demographic. Amazon's relationship with magazine publishers deepened when it started selling its Echo, opening the product to them to create content for it. So far, the two parties' interests seem aligned. In today's saturated market, it is still possible to find an untapped customer need.
