Some companies, such as Walmart, that rushed to implement DEI programs are now walking them back and reconsidering their strategies, due in part to political and legal pressures. Critics argue that many businesses did not think through their initiatives properly and treated DEI as a superficial add-on rather than a fundamental change. Joelle Emerson, CEO of technology consultancy Paradigm, expects more organizations will change their DEI direction -- instead of abandoning it -- and hopes they invest the time needed to develop meaningful, effective programs.
