Meet a Cockburn Volunteer

Matt Willson

Matt has lived in Cockburn for 17 years and wears many volunteering hats. He is the Chairman - Black Dog on a Lead Charity, Vice President - Beeliar Community Voice, WA Working Group - Neighbourhood Watch and Coordinator - Perth Meditation.

He was inspired by the birth of his daughter seven years ago and his own need to live in healthy environments. He believes a community raises a child and wanted to help shape his surroundings by contributing to Mental Health, Community and Safety initiatives to make Cockburn a great place to be.

Matt's top tips for new volunteers:
  • Realistically plan how many hours a week you could volunteer for. Then choose a group that aligns with your values. Approach them with your availability
  •  Always connect with the Cockburn Resource Centre
  •  Plan to diversify to touch more of your values
  •  Networking is key
  •  The skills you have now are valuable, no matter your background.
What is Matt working on at the moment?
  • Black Dog on a Lead – Planning and Marketing our event, 10 October at Bibra Lake Reserve
  • Beeliar Community Voice – Supporting a new team and revising our strategy
  • Neighbourhood Watch – Revising strategy and creating clear objectives
  • Perth Meditation – Planning R U OK? Day Events and Guiding in the North Lake road centre, Wednesday and Thursday nights

Ideas for Volunteer Appreciation

Valuing Volunteers

Appreciation comes from everyone when volunteering. If you know someone doing a great job these are our top 10 tips for showing appreciation:
  1. Simply say 'thank you'
  2. Send cards, notes, letters and certificates
  3. Showcase a volunteer of the month
  4. Call out great work in front of others
  5. Social media shout outs
  6. Nominate them for volunteer awards
  7. Encourage peer recognition
  8. Celebrate National Volunteer Days
  9. Share volunteer stories
  10. Host volunteer events like a morning tea, ‘bring a plate’ meal or end of year party.
Just in case someone hasn't thanked you for the contribution you make to your community... Yanga - Grazie - Salamat - Obrigado - Thank you!
