The City officially opened the new Frankland Park Sports and Community Facility late last month. Located in Hammond Park, the space includes two full size AFL ovals, a baseball batting cage, clubrooms, changerooms, community activity spaces, toilets and a 150 bay carpark. It will serve as a homeground for Hammond Park JFC and Braves Baseball Club.
The City, with the Water Corporation, offers $250 - $500 subsidies for residents to fund improving their verges by laying mulch and planting native flora. Not only does it look spectacular, it creates a habitat for native birds and can save you money on your water bill. The program is open from 15 May - 30 September.
A 35m geotextile sand container (GSC) seawall has been buried in the dunes in front of Rollinson Road at C.Y. O’Connor Beach. The GSC will allow for more stable dunes to establish, reducing sand blowing into the nearby park and covering cycle paths. The City will revegetate and rehabilitate the dunes once the seawall is installed.
The GSC will complement the modular engineered fringing reef installed offshore and act as a backstop to severe storm erosion. This project is part-funded by CoastWest and the City of Cockburn.
The City welcomed recent news of the $4.3b investment to deliver a dry-dock facility at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson. The dry-dock will enable the construction, maintenance and preservation of large naval vessels in Australia and support an even stronger commercial shipbuilding and sustainment market in WA. Work will start in 2023 and initial operations will commence in 2028.
Stage 3 of the Port Coogee Marina expansion is progressing well, with some new berths opening in July 2022. All concrete floating jetties and supporting piles are installed for the 69 new marina berths. Modules for the 90m timber boardwalks and jarrah decking are under construction. The gatehouses are delayed due to shipping, so we aim to open two of the three jetties from July and will be able to accept some new boaties from our waitlists. In the meantime, the contractors will finish the last jetty, loading platform and second gatehouse.
The City aspires to become carbon neutral and transition to a zero-emissions vehicle fleet. A new report outlines how we could produce green hydrogen power for our heavy waste trucks.
