135 bomboras will be cast for installation at C. Y. O'Connor Beach this month.
Beach erosion trial a first for Australia Like you, we love C.Y. O'Connor Beach. That's why we're acting on community feedback to find smart ways to reduce erosion that has consumed 50 metres of the beach in the past 20 years. In an Australian first, 135 concrete modules will be installed 100m offshore, opposite Rollinson Rd, this month. The bomboras will create a unique engineered fringing reef, in a trial designed to reduce wave energy reaching the shore. The $565k project, in partnership with SubconTechnologies Pty Ltd and The University of Western Australia, was made possible with funding from the City and State Government, plus Federal Government funding to assist a three-year study.

Major works & closure of Coogee Beach Jetty Major works will be starting at the iconic Coogee Beach Jetty on Monday 14 March 2022. They include:A new beach access ramp for better beach accessibility Maintenance and renewal work to the existing structure, which includes refurbishing the timber deck and repairing the paint coatings on the steelwork.Works will run for approximately one month and the jetty is likely to be closed for most of this time.
Pump track and ninja-style course coming to Aubin Grove Upgrades to Radiata Park have started! More than 100 Aubin Grove students and residents shared their vision for the park with the City last year. Using this feedback, Ecoscape Australia designed a standout space catered to younger kids, featuring a junior pump track, ninja warrior-style obstacle course, 3-on-3 basketball court and skate strip. There will also be plenty of shaded spots for adults to sit and watch the fun. Works are due for completion mid year.
Dogs on-leash area opening in North Coogee As per our community’s wishes, from Monday 14 March a 600m section of beach in North Coogee will become a space for dogs on-leash. It includes the 200m shoreline of Chelydra Point Beach at Lot 2161 McTaggart Cove and 400m of the adjoining southern end of the C.Y. O’Connor Beach dog exercise area. To ensure the beach is enjoyed by all and on-leash requirements are adhered to, Council has approved additional funds to install extra Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in the area in the near future. In addition, our Rangers will be:Undertaking proactive patrols during peak periodsTemporarily installing a variable message board sign trailer to advise of the on-leash requirementsInstalling a highly visible and vandal-resistant delineation marker at the northern end of the on-leash areaInstalling permanent signs at the southern end of the dog on-leash beach area.

Bin audits are back to reduce bin contamination Our residents are doing a fantastic job of reducing the amount of waste heading to landfill by making sure their waste is sorted into the right kerbside bin. Contamination of recycling bins costs the City and ratepayers money – not to mention the harmful impact on the environment. Our auditing program – which is running until April – aims to continue educating our residents on how to eliminate bin contamination so we can continue this positive trend. On bin day, our friendly auditors check the contents of your recycling bins and leave a 😊 or ☹ tag, and sometimes a few tips to get you back on track.

In a clear indication that we’re always looking for ways to be kinder to the planet, we have introduced a rebate for reusable sanitary and incontinence products which is proving very popular amongst our residents. Up to $4K to help protect the environment Do you have an idea for a project that could enhance or protect the environment? We can help make it a reality through our Sustainability Grant program. Open until Thursday 31 March, community groups, not-for-profit organisations, schools, small businesses and collective households are eligible to receive up to $4,000 in funding. Your project must fit into one of the following themes:Giving BackProtecting our FutureStrong CommunitiesWater, Energy and WasteTravelSmartHealthy LifestylesFurther, every year the City offers up to $1 million worth of grants, donations and sponsorships through the Cockburn Community Fund. It aims to help fund projects and services that benefit our community.
