MEDIA WINNER: CNN's Whitney Wild
Certain Senate Republicans may not think it is necessary to have a commission to investigate the events of January 6, but it is still a very real trauma for many of the law enforcement officers who were at the Capitol that day.
CNN law enforcement correspondent Whitney Wild sat down with two Capitol Police officers for new interviews detailing the harrowing events of that day.
Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who emigrated from the Dominican Republic when he was 12 and later served in Iraq as a member of the Army Reserve, joined the Capitol Police in 2008. He told Wild that he feared for his life that day, and shared his shock and hurt that he, a military veteran, was being physically attacked by people calling him "traitor."
Officer Byron Evans also thought he might die on Jan. 6, and said it made him angry to see the rioters acting so disrespectfully in a building he had protected every day.
In an emotional segment, Gonell shared how he couldn't let his wife hug him when he got home after the riot, because he was covered in pepper spray and blood.
These are stories that need to be told, and Wild handled these important interviews with grace and empathy. |
